Question about the "factions" tab

This question is in regards to the Prophecies campaign.

When you press the 'H' key in your game you will recieve the Hero's box which has three tabs. One of them is the 'factions' tab. Can anyone tell me what all this means and how faction points are earned/rewarded? When I started my prophecies campaign, my faction points were like down around 1300 to 1500 I think (can't remember exactly) and they were Balthazarian. Then after I installed the factions campaign upgrade I noticed it went up to like 1885 or something. How and why did this happen? The faction points I'm referring to are for a character that I have NOT taken over to Cantha yet and that character doesn't have any Luxon or Kurzick points (maybe because I haven't taken him over to Cantha yet?).

I'm asking this question because anytime I do a search on this topic, all I get is info about the factions game itself and not what the tab means in the Hero box.

You earn Balthazar factions by playing in PvP. That means Random Arenas, Team Arenas, Hero's Ascent, Alliance Battle and they're used to unlock skills, runes, upgrades for PvP only characters.

Kurzick and Luxon faction you can earn by playing quests given by each of them and they're used mostly to be donated to your guild/alliance faction vault so you can own a outpost/town if you have enough points.

yea, most types of PvP combat (arenas, guild battles, alliance battles, etc) give Faction of Balthazar.

go to a Priest of Balthazar, and you can cash them in. If you have 1800, you can almost buy 2 skills or upgrades (1,000 each).

Everybody has played at least one battle because you are forced to after searing (a 4v4). If you killed someone in that you will have some Balthazar faction
