In further news, sales data from The NPD Group shows Guild Wars Factions as the number one selling PC game in North America for the month of May 2006.
"The highly successful release of Guild Wars Factions has solidified the Guild Wars franchise as a mainstay with gamers," says Bob McKenzie, Senior VP of Merchandising, GameStop, Inc. "ArenaNet continues to take chances in both game design and business model, and it's great to have the fans respond so enthusiastically right out of the gate with Guild Wars Factions," says Patrick Wyatt, co-founder of ArenaNet. "Our fans have been overwhelmingly supportive of Guild Wars, and we will continue to make the Guild Wars franchise bigger and better with each release."
Guild Wars and Guild Wars Factions are global online roleplaying games in which players immerse themselves in a rich fantasy world, build personalized characters, compete in head-to-head battles with players from around the world, and find adventure in missions and quests. In the game that has captivated millions of players, more than 7000 guilds worldwide are currently competing in the Guild Wars Factions tournament season, the finalists of which will be flown to Leipzig, Germany in August to compete for more than $100,000 in cash and prizes. 2 Million Units, that includes both Factions and Prophecies. That means that I count as 2 units. So I think there are far fewer accounts than 2 Million. Then consider how many of those are active... how many are repeat buys from bot farmers original accounts being banned... you get the idea.

Still, congrats though. Looks like they are slowly, but surely making their way up there.

Exactly my thoughts, and what about those people who bought 3 prohecies accounts, and then 3 factions accounts? At least it is still selling though, just not necessairly to 2 million people.

every one of those is a sale and it doesnt matter if they take a break as Anet does not lose monthly income from inactive/closed/etc accounts

I'm very happy for Arena.net in this success.

I have to admidt, when I first heard about Guild Wars (before it went into beta) I wasn't all that enthused. It didn't strike me as that big of a deal for some reason. I completely ignored the game, even after release. I ended up buying it out of boredom in Sept of 05, and it only took a few hours before I saw how wonderful the game was. 9 months later, and 600 hours played, and I'm still loving it with a passion.

I feel sorry for the people who don't "get it". You see it alot on other forums, or usenet, where people complain about the level cap, only carrying 8 skills at a time, etc.. They just don't GET IT. They are missing out on a wonderful and addictive game.

I know a lot of ppl with 2 acounts and some with 3 or even 4 acounts this does not mean more players. well it does mean bad storage and not enough character slots.

THQ: WOW too strong to take on
Company CEO says going up against World of Warcraft would be "misguided" for any publisher; suggests waiting until Blizzard's hit is in decline to go massively multiplayer.
By Brendan Sinclair, GameSpot
Posted Jun 19, 2006 2:38 pm PT
Despite promising sales of products like NCsoft's Guild Wars Factions, Blizzard's World of Warcraft is still the undisputed king of the massively multiplayer online game world. Not only has it staved off a number of MMO contenders since its launch, but it might actually be intimidating some of the game world's biggest publishers to stay out of the MMO game.

In a presentation to the Lazard Capital Markets Investors Breakfast today, THQ president and CEO Brian Farrell was asked why none of the major publishers have done much in the massively multiplayer online space. His answer showed some deference to Blizzard's juggernaut.

"We're looking at it very closely, but I want to find the right opportunity," Farrell said. "I think what you will not [Farrell's emphasis] see THQ do is come out with another fantasy-type game. The other thing we're thinking is these things tend to have a window. Right now that product is World of Warcraft, so the idea would be to time something for when that product is going to be on its downward slope. To come out with something competitive now I think would be misguided for anyone, including THQ."

FFVII was made a movie and has done very well

Lets not name any bad ones there are too many.

That makes this even better for Anet. WoW has been out for many years. GW only 1 year and is at the 2 million mark. That's a very good sign for Anet. Dispite WoW GW is doing very well.

I didn't really like Advent Children that much. The movie seemed like it was 5 or 6 pieces shoved together with fighing in it. Other people love it, I find it repetitive. Oh well.

World of Warcraft hasn't been out for many years, unlike what you have suggested. The release date was November 23, 2004.

Aside from that mumbo jumbo, congratulations Guild Wars for creating such a solid fan base.

Um......November 23, 2006 HAS NOT EVEN HAPPENED YET!!!

It was 2004. That's a good 6 months. Only competition was EQ and FFXI. Both were monthly fees so WoW was a better pick at that time. Eventually there will be more free to play games and the montly fee games will fade. $180 a year to play WoW does not look very inviting to me. Not to mention you are paying for internet service. So far I've spent $100 on GW for a year and 6 months. Its a huge curb over time.

Advent was a continuation of the game's story. If you didn't play the game there was no real catch up which was nice IMO.

Eh, fixed the 2006 issue.

More than 2 years?

Google leads me to several links claiming that the release date wasn't within 2 years of time, let alone more.

Congrats Anet ,

2 million units sold in approx. a year is truly a great achievement considering there is so tough competition on the MMO markets and furthermore GW didn't have any history before the Prophecies like other big MMORPGS.

Don't forget, the Warcraft franchise had a huge following before WoW even came out. Guild Wars started from the ground up and with a much smaller budget and company. I think even now they only have 110 employees.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the last I heard was that WoW had around 7-8 million members now. Anyway those that I know that have playing WoW really loved it and I do think it looks like a great game, but as stated before I couldn't possibly convince myself to pay $180 in subscription fees for 1 year and the $50 cost of the game itself......just stupid IMO. Regardless whether I'd enjoy WoW or GW more, the matter of cost is my driving factor. GW is awesome and I'm sticking with it.

The numbers aren't even close...

GWG's main page news headline is quite misleading, and should be changed. GW:Factions hasn't sold 2 million units, the GW FRANCHISE has sold 2 million units.

GW chapter 1 sold well over 1 million by itself, and GW:Factions sold quite significantly less than that. The developers had alluded to having "blown past the million mark a long time ago" and that Chapter 1 sales reached 1 million about 6 months into it's release.

So, for the sake of argument, let's say chapter 1 sold 1.2 million (just a guess) - that means that Factions sold 800K. That's 1/3rd less than chapter 1.

And another guess, that 80% of the people that bought factions also owned chapter 1. Again, just a guess, I suspect it's probably closer to 90%, but I'm being generous.

I'd guess that there are about 1.5 million unique accounts. Of those, how many of the chapter 1 buyers are still actively playing GW? Probably at least 1/3rd of them either quit GW, or haven't decided on buying Factions yet, if at all. But let's say that of those 1.5 million accounts, they still have active players (at least 1-2 a week).

WoW has at least 5 million unique accounts. Not units sold. I'm sure it's closer to the 7-8 million mentioned earlier in the thread. But even 5 million UNIQUE accounts paying 12 bucks (or whatever) a month, and buying the core game, and all expansions.

The #s are staggeringly disproportionate.

Selling 1 million copies of any game certifies it as a "blockbuster" game - most game sales on average are 100K units, and a good title that would get considered for a sequel would be anything that sells 500K units (best seller).

And then there are games like the Sims franchise, which are in the 20-30 million+ units sold - and still going strong.

But still, GWs did well enough to fund future chapters, 2 more so far. I can't begrudge them for succeeding, because they have.

But chapter 1 sold well enough to fund chapter 2, and get developement started on chapter 3. Chapter 2 sold enough to guarantee chapter 3...but took a significant enough hit in sales to be somewhat troubling I'm sure.

So chapter 3 will really need to turn things around - if it's sales drop below 800K, especially if it drops as significantly as chapter 2's sales did compared to chapter 1, then things might be a bit bleaker.

Keep in mind, they need to project funding for server support long after they have stopped selling units.

Now, I'm sure that ANet (and NC Soft) haven't had to start considering selling off their ferraris quite yet. Gross profits of over 100 million dollars is staggering for a computer game franchise that probably cost (between the two chapters) less than 1/10th of that.

But I'm sure they weren't overwhelmed by Faction's sales, and I do truly think that Chapter three will need to really revitalize the franchise with something unique or it could be the last one published.

WoW is a cash cow with no signs of things slacking off, in fact, the steady increase in subscriber accounts is a much better indicator of growth than sales figures. I'd be very interested in knowing just how GWs are doing in that department. Even then it would be deceptive, since # of accounts in GW doesn't show how many are still actively playing the game. Those kinds of numbers are quite closely guarded, I'm sure.

And this, of course, is all just my opinion. Shrug.
