I use both at work and at home. I find that 9 times out of 10, Fireworks meets my needs both for photo editing and web based graphics. Fireworks is much more trim, uses fewer resources and it much faster, IMO. Fireworks handles layers more intuitively and the history is more forgiving while using yet again using fewer resources.

A good guideline is web output: Fireworks, hi-res print output: Photoshop.

Really depends on what you want to do. PS is for manipulation, fireworks is more for image creation. Johnny Hazard said it best. But, If you're gonna spend the money, you might just wanna wait to see what comes out next cuz Adobe now owns Macromedia.

Fireworks is not really for photomanipulation. Its for creating graphics for websites using both vector and raster formats. Kind of a Flash meets Illustrator meets Photoshop.

Photoshop is purely raster (ok ok, theres shapes...so nya) and is what you would want for photo editing.

I swear by Photoshop CS2 (9.0.1)! It's simply the best image manipulation software going.

I think firework are usually use for web-graphic, or gif. For photo manipulation, PS is the king of the hill.

So if you want to make icons and such, firework would be good, but for mmost everything els, PS can handle a decent job at it. (unless doing vector.. than I like flash better)

Hmm...I've been using PS CS2 for all of my web needs...maybe I will have to download a trial of Fireworks...

PS has been able to do everything I've thrown at it, and I've had a very good experience with it.

EDIT: I have a question; I design websites and such, and export them from PS to Image Ready in order to slice them and do the basic codeing. Can Firewoks do this as well? Does Fireworks even work well for site development?

I think that FW is for simple web graphics, nothing special. Personally, i use Photoshop CS2 and of course MS Paint! (joking about Paint...) PS is FTW.

MS Paint has some excellent features, like the spraycan.
