What to look for, when choosing a guild...
Goldleader
After about 3 months of going solo, I'm thinking about joining a guild to start enjoying the PvP aspects of Guild Wars.
I've noticed there are hundreds of Guilds actively recruiting, but I don't know what to look for when trying to choose a guild.
I joined a guild about 4 days after I first started playing, but never saw any of the 19 people online when I played, so I quit and went solo ever since.
I noticed that there is a place on these forums where I can post info about me and wait for interested guilds to write me. How can I tell if they are an active guild, vs. the typical "I'm leet, join my uber guild" garbage?

Hopefully they will have a forum for you to peruse to see who is on and active and hopefully get a feel for their community. As an example you could check out our forum, we're not PvP but the forum should give a sense of what I'm referring to.
Failing that you could just pick one that wants to invite you and try them out since it should not cost you anything to do so. If there is some kind of entry fee then I'd steer clear of that guild.

I go by 4 things:
Number of active members
Friendliness
Activity in PvP
Helpfulness in PvE

Personally, if they're actively recruiting, I don't join.
Instead, if I see/hear about a guild that interests me, I see if I can land a group with a few of them. If they seem like a good bunch, I ask about getting in. If I don't like them, well, then I know who to avoid

Yep yep!
"Hopefully they will have a forum for you to peruse to see who is on and active and hopefully get a feel for their community."
BIG yep. Having their own forum is a huge advantage: Everything is easier via a guild forum, and it fosters a greater sense of community with your guildmates.
You could also look for a multi-game guild (members in several different games). If in the future you move on from GW to some other game, you'll probably have a group of friends -- your guildmates -- to join. Also, guildmates from other games will likely try GW, and some will stick with it.
Best of luck!

I've been solo my entire GW stint until about a month ago when I decided that I should start looking for like-minded players to join up with. I spent a lot of time talking to people, reading about the guilds, and trying to get a feel if they and I were a good fit before I approached one. Taking your time and finding the right fit for you and for them is the way to go.
When I was solo the number of messages and random guild invites from people while I was just walking around was staggering. These are from people who have never grouped with me and had no idea and didn't seem to care if I was a huge jerk or not. Just think that if these people are so willing to let anyone in common sense says a certain portion of people will be people you can't get along with.
