Now here I go for citing resources

What you end up with is a game that
A. charges monthly
B. harvests chinese farmers because people with lives cannot get the "uber weapons of doom" and level 60 --> http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/07/16
C. has crappier graphics than the beta of Guild Wars
D. has "better PvE" *cough* http://www.thenoobcomic.com/daily/strip163.html
http://www.thenoobcomic.com/daily/strip180.html http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/11/28 http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/08/26 *cough*
E. has hardly any instances
F. has lots of maintainence times (compared to the one or two times in 1 year we had)
G. has lots of grind (grind fro armor, weapons, and fees for repairing armor/weapons)

Back to your regularly scheduled GW:

All comics for sources? Best way to argue ever, woot, so trustworthy. ;o

Anyway, here we go.

A) If you buy every expansion (I'm not buying this "standalone" crap) of GW, it's basically a monthly fee. You're paying $50 every six months, so divide that by six and there's your monthly fee.
B)GW has its share of farmers/bots too, dunno where this part comes in.
C)Meh, some prefer the cartoonish style. Some don't. Whatever.
D)Better is opinion, so some will go one way, some another. Whatever, it's your choice.
E)Some people prefer instanced gameplay, some prefer one huge world for all. Again, preference.
F)Maintenance is a part of a gamer's life, get over it.
G)If you don't think GW has any grind, you're blind. Faction farming, anyone? Fame, anyone? You don't HAVE to grind, no. Then again, you don't HAVE to play. ;o

If this is true, then all I can say is: gg, owned. GW FTW.

I wouldn't play WoW if it was free monthly!
Same here, but that's mostly I'm a sucker for games with high quality graphics, and WoW has nothing on GW in the graphics department. That just scared me away from WoW, so I'd never even think about playing it. I know all the old-school games had crappy graphics and more content, but imo, these days games don't have an excuse for crappy graphics.

You have some good points there, I might love guildwars (my favorite game ever), but I do agree that the list of problems is growing. I agree with what you said about thw hole "standalone" chapter thing, especially if each new chapter is like factions; 2 new classes, more armors/weapons, less PVE, 0 endgame content(compared to Prophecies). In my opinion ANET needs to rethink this business plan, or at least give us the same amount of content we payed $50 for with Prophecies, otherwise I doubt they'll be very successful.

I also agree that the price drop on WoW is most likely due to the fact that it's been out for a long time and they have an expansion coming soon and they want to lure more new customers to sell more expansions.

I personally think GW is more fun than WoW because:
1) no item ganking (unless someone kills your whole party)
2) no fighting over monsters with other groups or waiting for things to respawn because another group killed it
3) GW has map travel. yay!
4) GW has henchmen. you can suck at playing and nobody will yell at you.
5) you don't need to play for 3 months straight to get to the max level and get powerful weapons and armor in GW, and you don't ever have to rely on drops to get important things
6) if you die, you rez at the shrine and start over. no hunting your corpse and retrieving your stuff.
7) gw's servers almost never go down
8) gw's updates load and install automatically. you don't have to get them on bittorrent. (related funny comic)
9) the game is free after you buy it!!!

Sure, WoW is fun, but I would rather pay $100 a year for two Guild Wars games that I can play as much or as little as I want and have fun, inseat of paying $50 and then $15 a month for something that you need to invest a lot of time in if you want to have the same level of fun. If you have lots of time to burn, I can see why WoW would be appealing, since it's geared more towards those kinds of players who like to play constantly.

WoW originally costed like $50-60, PLUS the monthly fee. WoW expansions will be 30+ dollars, PLUS the monthly fee. You pay the retail price, and STILL pay for the monthly fee. With GW, you just pay the retail price. I don't think your argument is fair at all. GW is definately less money overall. Maybe not *alot* less, but it's less.

Wasn't saying GW doesn't cost less, just saying, since you pretty much have to buy every new chapter to keep up, it's just like having a monthly fee. Still cheaper than WoW, yes. Fee-less, not really. ;x

Not to offend, but saying that WoW is not good based on graphics versus GW is a pretty poor argument. Gameplay counts for so much more, and in reality, the GW environment isn't too great with graphics versus other games that have been out for a year.

As for WoW dropping prices, if GW is their main competitor, then they should really be selling more :P GW is one of MANY MMO's that are growing rapidly.

I think WoW is gettin worried hehehe
WoW getting worried? Well let's do the math here. :P

GW has 2 million players.

GW has been out for a year and two months.
WoW has been out for a year and seven months.

WoW:
$15.00 bucks for 1 year. $180.00
$50.00 bucks to buy the game. (Before the very recent price drop)
6,000,000 players have bought the game. Times that by 50 bucks for the game.
Game sales based on player base: 6,000,000 * $50.00 = $300,000,000
Monthly fee: $180.00 * 6,000,000 = $1,080,000,000
Game sales plus one year release fees: $1,080,000,000 + $300,000,000 = $1,380,000,000

GW:
$50 bucks to buy the game.
2,000,000 * 50 = $100,000,000

$1,380,000,000(WoW) - $100,000,000(GW) = a difference of $1,280,000,000

Yeah, well over one billion dollars in difference.

WoW is very worried...

Also, a quick Google and I see the price is ranging from $20.00 (Amazon.com) to $40.00 (Best Buy).

Finally!

Someone has made a sensible post! I highly doubt that GW is the reason why WoW has dropped in price. It's only natural for a game that's been out for about 2 yrs to drop in price. I.E Look at FFXI the game is still going pretty strong and it's selling at around $30 for the core game I believe. It's just the natural order of business I say.

Yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that WoW is 2 years old and more directly competing games with equal name recognition have been released (Turbine's Dungeons & Dragons), and up and coming games, Hellgate: London Turbine's Lord of the Rings: Online, and Huxley.

i played gw for 2,000+ hours, and ejoyed it alot, why else would i play so much. i just quit to *gasp* play WoW. I had many friends leave gw to wow so i decided i give it a try and i liked it. i used to be of those gw fanboys looking for any reason why gw was better than wow ( graphics? come on...they're better in gw but not really an arguement that makes gw better) regardless it's your opinion whether or not you like wow. i guess im alright with grinding even though thats what you up end doing in gw if want some of the high end stuff...

Chilly....lol... I just finished beating the hammer bro's in mario&luigi partners in time on DS and they were possesed by helmets that made them say PWN and 1337 and stuff like that ROTFLMAO and Overnite, I see your point but take the time to go over to one of THEIR boards and say GW Roxx you SOXXORZ then I can almost guarantee same thing will happen, I just ahte people who hate me, as do most people, naatural human instincts. as to the main topic I think it is SLIGHTLY possible that the WoW drop was due to GW but more due to the fact that as has been sai WoW has been out for a veeerrry long time and was due in for a price drop, its alot like PS2 and greatest hits, after a crudload have been sold the price drops from 50$ to 20$ God of War price drop FTW

You want the real reason why the price for WoW was lowered?

http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/da...210exv99w1.htm

Quite simply, it's business. It wasn't about competition, they're just trying to lure new people to try WoW because of the lowered price.

I'm betting that Burning Crusade is part of the reason they lowered the price. They want the maximize the sales for Burning Crusade, so if they can get more players because of a lowered initial retail price they're willing to do that.

Competition is just completely irrelevant in the eyes of WoW. Since every other MMORPG is an infant compared to the insane popularity of WoW. Just look at the numbers here: http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart1.html

FYI: a link provided in page 2 of this thread to a WoW website says 6 million users worldwide. someone added 10. Also, WoW has been out for a year. Blizzard says thier Warcraft franchise has been out for about 10.

EDIT: there it is

http://teaser.wow-europe.com/index.html

WoW, EQ2, City, etc. They have their place but not on my PC. I just don't go in for the monthly fee anymore. It makes it feel like I NEED to play to get my money's worth out of them. I don't hate them but like most people here I (or your parents for a few boistrous individuals) do not want to pay for it again every month. Personally, I stopped playing EQ after Sony charged me for a month of Matrix online and didn't get into WoW after hearing of simular "payment issues" from Blizzard. I'd still love to see a free MMO of Guild Wars quality (and if I do, adios) but for what I'm now paying, I prefer a less is more attitude.

In regards to the OP, I doubt that Guild Wars had a significant effect on Blizzard's decision to lower the price of WoW. As its been said, its an old game, and one year equals antiuque in computer terms.

i have also played gw for 2000 hours+ , but i am still playing,
about 500 hours ago in terms of guild wars gametime i played wow.
at first thought "wow this is kinda cool" (great pun as well)
but after 3 days i stopped.
why?
because wow is just quest after quest of kill this, get its remains, talk to some featureless npc, get some pointless skills, rinse, repeat.
the reason why i still play gw is because of pvp
the whole game is centred around it
(the clue is in the title)
and personally this could be one of the reasons why it is doing so well,
or it could just be that lots of people are cheap-skates and cannot stomach a monthly fee.
but i know which i would chose
7£ a month to talk to n.p.c.s
or free to play versus other people and with freinds

also
one last thing
ur prob going say that i have to spend 30 pounds on the "stand alone exp"
it doesn't bother me frankly because i think my bank balence can stomach buying the lastest gw release rather than a movie tie-in.
