Brining down load time and LAGGG
Akbur the great
Ok so i have a 50 Mbps connection with wireless (100mbps if i want to use a cord) so its NOT my conection thats makes me lag like crazy and take up to 3 min per load.
im sick of it.. i cant PvP cause im dead by the time i load. alot of ppl leave missions when they see me (as the monk or tank) gone even though really im still jst loading.
so my question is what do i do to fix all this?
i contacted the people who made my computer (dell) and was lucky enough to get a guy who's an extream gamer and he suggested more RAM so i bought 1 gig of Ram and its on its way now.
do you think this will help? any help would be appreciated.
thanks.

Dude im with u on this, i have a dell and have the same problem.. I have 256mb of ram and ordering another one so i will have 512 ... im in your exact position-- Please look at the thread "After loaded 100% the screen stays the same! VERY ANNOYING!" Look at the post by vecte(i think thats his name) In the 500 paragraphs he says, he pretty much means dells suck at gaming but i guess ram MIGHT help. Idk the only thing i can do is buy more ram. It should help dude. Do u have 256 right now? Try only running guildwars when playing, dont have other programs minimized, try to keep the cpu down. (press alt+ctrl+delete to have tasks pop up) from tasks you can check out the cpu usage. Im stuck with my computer because my family, so i just have to make do with it. When i move out im hopefully getting an Alien ware... *drools*

Getting more ram will help, but what will probably help more is a faster hard drive. How fast is yours now? I suggest having at least a 7200 rpm one, although 5400 shouldn't make loading times that bad.
Also, getting ram from dell means your going to pay a lot more than you would if you got it from new egg or something.
Edit: Alienware is also overpriced. I suggest making your own or going with some other brand, you'll get a lot more for your money.

David, where do i check my hard drive? im not a big techie so not really sure
Akbur the great
ah yes i read ur thread guild warris...personally i think that kid (or adult) who wrote that "essay" is full of shit, dells are fine for gaming.

To check your hard drive, you can right click on my computer and click on properties. Select the Hardware tab, and click Device Manager. On the divice manager list, double click on disk drives. Here you will see What hard drive(s) are in your computer. You can't get more detailed information here, so you have to use the model number thats listed in the device manager and search for it on google or something. You can find more infromation about it that way. For instance, under disk drives, my computer shows FUJITSU MHV2100AH. I would google that.
a somewhat useful picture for ease of use.

As for Dell. Sorry, but Dells along with the majority of pre-built, mass-produced PC's are terrible when it comes to gaming. Especially when you compare them to a self built system costing the same.
I see people on a daily basis with PC problems, both gaming and in general, and around 99% have a mass-produced PC! They may be OK for surfing the interweb, email and general home/office use but when it comes to gaming they are no where near as good as they claim to be.

Yeah, but for GW it doesn't really matter what type of pc you have. GW doesn't exactly push gaming pcs to its limits, so any halfway decent pc should run it.
Mustache Mayhem
defrag the drive and set your page size to 1.2gig- should be 1200-1200.. defrag is in accessories.. check your startup (start>run> type msconfig) for background apps hogging memory.. shutdown services by typing services.msc in the run box.. page size can be dealt with under control panel>system>advanced tab>performance>advanced>virtual memory.. when you get that 1 gig of ram in, change this to 2 gig (you want roughly 2x your physical memory set- Min 1.2 for xp.. windows 98 Min 512)- it'll definitely help if you do these things =]
Tarun
What's needed is a sufficient pagefile, boost in RAM and a nice processor.
Set your pagefile to 768/768MB (Min/Max)
Also, try making a new GW shortcut and have this path:
That shortcut will download and decompress all updates and data in the GW.dat file. Your load times will be instant, usually :P

Code:
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\gw.exe" -image

The morale of this story is when you buy dell, or other name brand PCs you get ripped off. Get a friend to make one for you, youll pay a bit more but get way more bang.

TB, i live in a very small town with nothin big near by. i dont have any friends who could ever make a computer (me and all my freinds are roughly 15) so i really have no where to go for a custom made computer

Akbur's problem isn't the fact that he has a dell, its the fact that he needs some more power in his computer, such as ram or a better hard drive.

Right click on the shortcut for guild wars, and where you see the path, type in what Tarun has above. The next time you load guild wars, it will decompress all the files, so the game doesn't have to decompress it while you play. When your done, delete the "-image" part.

Mine says: "D:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe" -perf display fps
So I can see my FPS in play... My connection speed and how many polygons I'm running...
My question is can I do the -image... AND -perfs display fps
Thanks a bunch.

My computer has 2gigs of ram and it loads to 100% damn quick, but does lag at that screen for 2 or 3 seconds. Not so sure what the solution is.

Never mind my question... I answered it for myself. Thanks for the info on the GW.dat file. I didn't notice much difference, but whatever. I did the -image

What did you do to fix it?

Stock hardware in Dells sucks, so unless you basically replace everything you will have an inferior product, period.
