Ranger sword and shield help

I have followed other links from forum to make a running ranger but also i have been told i need a defensive sword and shield, what is ment by this and what axamples can be giving for one? thanks

A sword with +5 defense? A shield with bonusses while stanced?

Just get a random sword and add +5 defense to it. The mod costs 3-5k. I use the collectors crimson carapace shield (+45hp/-2dmg while in stance) that you get outside Thirsty River in exchange for 2 bleached shells. I'm pretty sure they are shells anyways.

for the sword, you could also use an axe as long as it had +5 energy and a defense/fortitude mod.
