In the event that you didn't kill it in time,
Bring Pet,
Pure pet skills:
Comfort Animal
Charm Animal
All pet attack skills
Use your bow and fire, while telling your pet to kill
Two attacks vs 1. Doppleganger will use axe against pet and die. Doppleganger does not have a pet, so its a 2 on 1 situation.

On a side note ascending with spirits spam is so easy that I changed my secondary in Senji's to R for all my new canthan chars and killed him with ranger skills. Yeah you can. And you even can do it with comfort animal only (next to charm of course). That is how I did it... with a lvl 8 pet.
