Prizegrabbing Etiquette
Mournblade
I actually laughed because someone asked me to stop grabbing celestial essence from a certain spot and let them have a chance. Considering we were up by 200pts. over the bad guys, I had no problem sitting the rest of the game out so this poor person could carry a glowy ball for a few seconds. :P
As for the prizes - its a GAME. There are winners and there are losers. If you can't take losing on occasion, don't play. This is where sportsmanship should come in, 'good grab mate, you really did well! How did you manage to grab so many?' If ONE SINGLE person would have been that polite to me I would happily have told them about the ";" key, the sugar rush, and some good places to stand.

I like the OP's idea.
I think im going to camp at the merchant, and charge a toll to anyone wanting to stand on that spot, after all if i get there first, surely i own that spot?

What other people do is up to them, I can only take resposability for my actions, I did get a few gifts, but I gave a few things away during this event, so I would not consider myself a hog, plus I only collected during 1 of the many events they had. I can imagine though that there were those who went back every time and collected.

How grabbing a price before someone else can get it be any worse than the senseless Player versus Player violence in the Battle Islands? I mean there are people killing eachother for fun and we are talking about stealing presents from eachother...

I saw both ends of this.
I stood with an Ele at the armor guys and we ended up taking every second drop each. Never said a word to each other but by the end of it we were emote cheering at each other. When it was over we waved and parted ways.
There are decent people around, but this event really brought the trolls out of the woodwork (I ended up putting around 15 people on ignore).
Another time I got to the armorer first and around halfway through someone ran up to the same spot. While I was typing and they grabbed two and lol-ed at me, and then proceeded to emote "shoo" over and over and over. After that I picked up 90% of the presents that dropped in the area and they got mad and called me a loser and left.
To me it didn't matter if people shared a spot with me. You don't own a thing until it's in your inventory. And most districts were so full that some people only got to pick up one or two gifts. I was lucky to get what I did.

Re: PvP
That's the best part!
On the topic though, I too simply camped back near the rings games where there were afk'ers galore. I got ~100 presents in the two prize drops I participated in. And that was without making any real effort.
And Gus wasn't grabbing prizes. At least not last night. We were busy killing other players in GvG.

Shame on you!

This is a funny topic, and so was watching everyone getting heated up if you took a prize from under therr noses. You would all go crazy if you went back and played D2 again. The drops are exactly like this, and that's one of the things I love about the game. The competition rocks.

Personally I say all is fair in love and war >_>
However many times I had a spot and people would invade. There were no "rules" If you were faster you got it!
By the third round there was some monk chic trying her hardest to be sneakie and steal my gifts but I had me a bean cake and a loaded trigger finger =P
I let her take a gift out from underneath me once, because I had taken 3 from under hers cause she kept trying to steal my gifts. I found the prize grabbing politics silly. Its the same at every event, at least this one wasn't as bad as X-mas.... Shoot those were designated spot drops... People would come and stand on you trying to kill your ability to click with their name in the way.... I just changed perspective so that their name was no longer an issue... They would eventually give up and run away. I also handed out gifts to those who got few.

I camped near the henchies everytime I participated. If there was more then 2 people, I'd just find another district. The last time, I camped there 2 minutes before they started dropping. When it starts, an ele walks up next to me and camps there. Didn't exchange any words, but basically I went for the ones near my feet and everything left of me. He went for everything near him and right of me. He go 48 and I got 53.
If anet wanted to go pve about it, they could go back to the "Mad King Says" game. You can even get prizes going afk and eliminates the "get the #$^@ out of my spot" comments. Just need to know how to emote.

i think it's stupid that festival gifts spawn at certain spots anyway. they should drop randomly all over if theyre going to drop at all. that would stop lame "My spot!" camping and move it back to how it is intended to be -- a happy, fun game running around like children on a sugar rush to collect as many as possible in the time alotted in friendly competition.

As I only managed to witness the "final event" twice, I both times took a spot near the armor guys (the 2 on the right). Once I was grabbing a couple of prizes when someone came standing next to me grabbing them to. I considered it rude as there were still other spots. Also, I wasn't all that greedy. Some people actually do take an other spot, even when it has less prizes. So I saw someone standing not that far away from me at a singleprizedrop spot and I thought, lets be nice and give him my spot, as it was obvious he didn't want to steal someone's spot. I saw quite a lot flaming about this, other people got very angry when others went standing next to them. And for all the people going to say "its just a game" "lol, lame" etc, I think you should have some manners ingame too. I guess you dont like PUGS staying AFK making it hard for your group to get through a mission e.d. |
True Prizegrabbing "Etiquette:" Grab the prize before someone else does.
If you don't like it, too bad. Its not like you've lost anything.

If someone wanted to stay in 1 spot and just go for that spawn, that was fine by me. But I think it's just as much fair play to 'fight' over that spawn. It was a free-for-all event, just like the dragon's nest, that was the point in my opinion. And I don't think it was 'cheating' to use the cakes, again, that's what they are for. Otherwise, why make an item that can only be used in towns.
TRUEgamer
I was an absolute bastard in this regard.
I had my backslash key bound to targetting the nearest item, and as soon as I heard/saw a present drop, I mashed backslash and space instantly and got the present before anybody else.
Though, most of the time, I camped out at either the henchies or the festival games long before anybody else got there. So it isn't like I ruined anybody's game really...

; + spacebar at emperor = 2-3 presents each time 4-5 drop at once. woot

They pretty much were random. There were so many of them, and so many dropping at random times and spots that it didnt matter if it was the same spot. every 3rd or 4th drop.

Whoever picked the present up first "won" - simple.
I tried to respect the "squaters" but - I had fun running around and picking things up. Sometimes I was first, oftentimes I wasn't. It was fun seeing who could get there first. A few presents were picked up right at my feet by someone else - good for them! Bad for me for not paying attention.

The only thing that disappointed me about this was the level of rudeness in gamechat. Otherwise, who cares if the presents spawned randomly or at designated areas (where anyone or NPC was standing). I mean seriously, red bean cakes, wine, orbs...maybe 2 1k's out of 100 opened, it's not that big of a deal. Certainly not worth the effort to debate, which is why I am steady asking myself why I am posting...
bete
I camped by the frog for the prizes(2 spawn points) and pretty much got left alone. ~40 prizes each round. 60k or so in gold, wine and bean cakes. I've also got about 800 orbs to sell this week.

Anyways when I saw the drops and people ''claiming'' spots.
I just left, it's so pathetic how people care about a few presents made out of pixels.

Guys...this was a real aplication of the Wack-a-Worm game. I figured Anet wanted this kind of 'competition'.
I tried to find totally empty districts and clean house (70+ in one single run)
To be honest, I was REAL good at grabbing these things, but I INTENTIONALLY did not contest some spawns if I had taken some from particular players, or if I noticed that one player seemed to react slowly.
Competition? YES.
Sportsmanship? YES.
My final total 384 presents.

I smiled every time I picked up a present laying at the feet of someone who was typing a complaint in chat. =D

I camp at a spot but I dont claim it my own.
Although if someone comes along, I wont spaz at him...I just grab the presents faster =)
If anyone tells me to move, I just ignore them.

Mapping a key to "target nearest item" -- genius. I can't believe I didn't even think of that.

The most i gotten was 54 presents... hey Carinae share some presents with me!

I tried the same approach as Carinae Dragonblood last night. At the time I wasn't sure if spawn quantity was related to the amount/location of players in the district. But as Erasculio mentioned it seems the prizes were dropped according to where anyone (apparently including NPC's) was standing. Unfortunately, the slow district I was in had nobody afk so it was a total free-for-all. I ended up not doing too well with all the other prize-grabbers in the district. I only got about 25-30 prizes. They just beat me to the punch which I feel is totally fair.
My first experience with the prizes was yesterday morning before leaving for work. Like many others I left my character afk overnight on the rings with stacks of tickets. When I checked in the morning (7AM Est), the prizes had just started to spawn. There were about 12 people afk and one other person and me running for presents. I managed to nab ~140 or so.

The problem was dialup users in a free-4-all had about zip chance if they didn't have a camped spot. It was a nessessity of the style of game that some people grabbed spots.
I did consider it rude when people bothered those sitting by an NPC. Even with the spot campers there were plenty of gifts to fight over if that was your thing.

I must say I actually waited in someones spot mearly beacuse the guy was telling everyone that got near him "GET THE 'F' FROM ME!" so after the third time he told a low level that revenge was in order >= )
I stood right where he was and he went skits "GET THE F FROM ME!" he kept typing and everytime he did he missed a pressy, the final thing that made me laugh was me teasing him saying "WOOT 1k YEAH!" lol
The only reason I did this wasn't im an asshole (well maybe just a bit ) but the fact he was screaming at people I just had to do it hell made my day I was in stiches the whole way threw, Even more so when he said that I hoped I died that day lol
Spoilt kids god I love pissing them off >= )

yepyep, if I could pick it up I would, no reason to be slow if it's at your feet.. target nearest item is <3, stolen flag pass-off's with it at least 12 times in gvg, lol ^^

I have many stories about this, but most of them can be represented with the general story of me picking a place where there was frequent dropping. Of course, some people had silently 'laid claim' to these areas, and began to flame me uncontrollably when I began to grab their presents.
Give me a break, children, share or go back to kinder garten. I don't give a rat's ass that you hate me for taking a couple of your presents, most of them were orbs anyways. Grow up.
You say etiquette, I say I'll be nice to them if they stop screaming at me over a pointless minigame.

Ever since the present drops of the Winterdays event (not talking about the one where you ran and gave to a kid) it was the worst idea they had. Halloween was so much better all you had to do was play the game and follow the Mad King. There was no bad mouthing, stealing from others because it showed up in the person inventory.
Presents that spawned where not random drops, seeing how they would spawn at my feet. I went way out there wasn’t a soul next to me and had them spawn at my feet. They also spawned at NPC’s location.
Had a few taken from me because they would move right on top of me even when I moved away, they soon stopped when I did it to them. And I seen other trying to get then one’s at their feet snatched up by someone else when then I told them move closer the NPC.
But I guess this is just one way people will always try to justify stealing something to make themselves feel better…But thankfully the event is over.

i attended 4 of the end events. my highest was 97, lowest 74, and the other two were somewhere in between...and i didn't feel the slighest bit sorry for anyone who i may have stolen a few from. <3 Sugar Rush. Who wants to celebrate with some wine?

213 and 209 presents in two runs in the districts that had ring idlers and only 1 person for competition on the gift snatching. And when you're running on maxed out speed boost (sugar rush + celestial charge in hands), you get most if not all of them easy.
It was a fun minigame
