Overfarming and how can you get around it...
pug_ster
I just farmed some boss and noticed that there were no drops at all, not even cheap common weapons. So I guess that i overfarmed it. I recall that you have to do something like completing a mission to get around it so you can get drops again. Anybody know what you have to do? Thanks.

If you didn't get the little blue box warning you that you have only killed the first few opponents(and I use the term loosely) in the area... then its not you, its just that the boss has been overfarmed by everyone else. I've run the same boss 10-20 times and have gotten a few times where nothing dropped, but it comes back the next time. Some bosses it helps to know what they visually wield when they are carrying your green of choice (rajazans sword is distinct from the brutal sword stock graphic), some you can't tell (stonereaper staff).
If you DO get the pop up, wait 24 hours and have at it.

I used to farm the minotaurs in elona reach with my 55 necro. After about an hour of it, they stopped dropping anything. What worked for me was to go somewhere else in Tyria and wait for a long time outside a city. I would leave and do something else, and when I came back 45-60 minutes later, I could farm again. So anyway, that's what worked for me.

No I didn't get the blue warning box saying that i have farmed too much. But it does help to know that if others are farming at the same spot, it will affect your drops. Yeah, I guess that's what I have to do farming somewhere else or come back at another time to farm at the same spot.

Rotate.
I have about 8-10 spots I actively farm for resources and greens. I only go through each about 5 times before I switch.
If you do get the anti-farming warning then you can rinse it off by doing 1-2 missions. Go do something easy like an early prophecies mission.

You know, that poses an interesting question. Let's say if you get the anti-farming warning in one of your chars, does it affect your other chars when you try to farm the same mob? Thanks.

Personally, I've been playing 13 months, have been farming constantly for along time, and though I've seen blatant item degradation, I have never, EVER, not ONCE seen this fabled 'blue pop-up'.
Conan The Castrater
Maybe I'm too cautios but heres how I belive the system works:
You have a global drop quality meter for each area, which goes down depending on the number of mobs that have been killed in the area recently across the entire server. Troll Cave for example.
Secondly you also have your own individual drop quality meter. Everyone is seeming to say that your own individual rating will only go down when the blue box appears. I notice a reduction in drop quality as soon as the second run, repeat farming a map without going anywhere in between. Like I said Im too cautios or pessimistic or whatever the word is, but thats how it feels to me.
EDIT: Just wanted tom point out Im talking general mobs, have no experience with going after a particual green. Also a few of the areas I farm in appear to be fairly clean (ie I have never seen another soloer or for that matter almost anyone in these towns).

Maybe you should try turning the tips on.

I agree with with Conan, I think your drops suck if everyone is farming the same place, and they start degrading if you farm a place more than once in a row, even if you don't get the pop-up. Or even if you're mapping back in town after getting 60dp from a quest to try again.

I have to agree with the idea of drops being an everyone affair. First time I killed and only mind Ssaki, he dropped nothing at all. I only fought him one time previous to that. So I cant see why else he would have dropped nothing at all than other people farming him.

wtf? What blue pop up? Do you guys have hack programs installed?

When I'm in a farming mood, I log on, hit 5-10 bosses, then log off my green farmer, usually in well under an hour, and not infrequently with another 40+ plat.
Seems to work fine for me.

No it's not a hack program or any third party program, it's already in the game. Like those tips that pop up when you first start playing the game.
ttostorm
how do you turn tips on?

Is there any evidence anywhere that this really happens?

What "everyone is farming it, so drops go down" really means is that ANet usually nerfs drops in areas that are being abused. Augury Rock, for example. Sskai is another. There are countless cases of this.

I do think the problem is overfarming by the entire community.
I say that because i started farming Ghial just two days ago, i had to kill him around 7 or 8 times to get my first staff. The second time he droped i was killing him the 11th time after getting the first one. Yes, i do kill him only 4 or 5 times before going somewhere else coming back only one or two hours later.
If that's not server farming nerf i don't know what it is. I've heard once that you need to kill different mobs on the same map, before or after farming WITHOUT changing the map, to increase you drop rating. It works on Ettin farm, i kill the Ettins on North Kryta Province, killing Fire imps on the way and killing Bog Skales after finishing with the Ettins. Then i go to Nebo Terrace, kill all the Avicaras on the entrancem, including the boss, finish off the Ettins then go back to North Kryta Privence repeating the process.
It's pretty easy to kill the Avicaras, if you don't know. Engage one group at a time, use any kind of fast recharging Enchantment as Cover Enchantement (Vigorous Spirit or Healing Breeze are good choices), kill the Mesmer ASAP and then rest of the group. They drop some nice things too, got some Superior Runes, a perfect Bow Grip of Fortitude and a perfect Sundering Axe Haft.

Question: If ANet nerfs EVERY OTHER farming place in the game, why am I still getting sup vigs from ettins near beetletun? That is one of the easiest and most overused farming spots in the game, and they don't appear to have nerfed it yet...
pug_ster
I did get that warning once when I killed Milthuran too many times when i noticed that i don't get any drops at all, even from the outcast guys. Ever since then, I just go to different places to farm after staying there 4-5 times.

I think the problem people are seeing that each person only sees there own drops. Human beings are HORRIBLE at being intuative about probaility and statistics.
Here's an example: if an item has a 5% drop rate, you expect that after 20 kills you see one drop right? Wrong. After 20 kills, you still have a 35% chance of NOT getting the drop (0.95^20 = 0.35). That means that over 1/3 of the people will not see the drop after 20 kills, despite that most people intuatively think 5% drop rate = 20 kills. It's about the same for a 10% drop and 10 kills (34%) and a 20% drop and 5 kills (32%). Add on top of that the net factor: the people who got 2 drops in a row aren't complaining about it on the internet. You often only hear from those who have been bitten.
Sure, over 1000 kills, and you will most likely see 50 drops, but some people will still get 40, and some will get 60. Some unlucky sod will not get any. it doesn't take millions of people doing it for that one person to occur, but its just less likely.
I am not denying that Anet prob has some code to prevent farming. But its hard to isolate it when people are often overracting.
