Ive been doing some digging up recently. And im nearly 100% sure the darkness is something that will go through the series. But it brings alot of key questions.
What do we know about the darkness?
For one thing, we know they were not created by the Gods we know of. (Balthazar, Dwayna, Grenth, etc) So Who are they? We know that they first attacked the underworld, near the announcement of Guildwars Factions release. Currently we only know the name of their leader/one of their leaders. The Fury, A necrid horsemen who is an Elementalist. .
- Why did the Grasps want Celestial essence?
Whats Being done?
The Zaishen order, also released near The announcement of Guildwars factions are the ones in charge of tackling this problem. They are based in Cantha and do missions in other countries. They are the ones that are now tackling the problem at TOPK, Where the chaos was first sighted.
During the Dragon Festival, an NPC acolyte Norge was present at the monastery. He explained how they had battled the chaos but still did not know much about them.
But Why did they not send their own men to tackle the problem?
Has the problem grown this bad, that there will be more portals into the kingdoms?
The Underworld Portals
We know their are multiple portals to the underworld, but only 2 are known. TOPK and The Zaishen Portal. And the rumored portal in the ROF (Read its description).
What happens to the other portals? Have they already fallen?
*Sarcastic Question* Is GWEN THE LEADER OF THE DARKNESS?
I think Anets got a decent storyline going on here. I cant wait to see more, If anybody has anything to add, just add a reply and i will edit this post.
The Darkness. In-Series Storyline?

Demesis
They should have a giant shrine to Gwen, the unholy lord of darkness. I'd kneel to her statue all day and worship her.
Jetdoc
This should definitely be moved to the Druid's Overlook forum.
Personally, I love the twist the game is taking related to The Darkness. I would bet that Chapter 3 will flesh out their story even further.

fow= -the wilds- the falls
UW= -sheverpeaks mountains- lornar's pass
these temples look exactly the same as the 1ns in fow and the underworld a but still cost 1k 2 use

Also, The Darkness may be servants to Dhuum (see this thread for more speculations about him: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10011848)

Menzies:
The Darkness drop shadow weapons.
The shadow legions are the servants of Menzies.
Menzies has a track record of planar invasion, and therefore open access to the Rift (getting an army to FoW, and to the Halls).
Dhumm:
Dhumm was destroyed by Grenth in the Underworld, in a battle that reduced a place there to empty sand.
The earliest recorded prescence of Grenth in the UW is 48 BE. This is awhile ago.
There is no proof to state Dhumm survived his defeat and destruction at the hands of Grenth. All that remains are his Dream Riders, kept in check by the Reapers until the Terrorweb Brood imprisoned them.
The evidence shows the Darkness more likely to be on the side of Menzies.
There is alot more I or most others could string out about the potential motives and alliances between the Shadow Army, Dream Riders, and Terrorweb Brood, but that's in other threads already

Former Ruling
These monsters seem to come from a completely different realm than FoW or the UW (Menzies attacking FoW, and the story of Dhuum getting defeated in the UW). It is only refered to as the "Chaos Realm" ingame, and Portals tear into our realm of existence from time to time, like the one at the Rifts, and the ones that split open during the Dragon Festival.

hmmmm.....Nightfall.......Darkness.....
Im willing to bet a good amount that there's some serious presence of The Darkness in Chapter 3.
