"Say It Forward"
Mr.Interrupt
Hey, I wanna bring for the issue of players helping the game for a moment. One of my characters ingame is "Syllabear the Druid" and I tonight (using him) am starting a campaign to clean up our game. It may have been tried before but I am trying it again. Maybe the voice of the community can do something that ANET has been unsuccessful to do up to this point.
Say It Forward intails telling any district that is having issues with people using "All" chat for trades to Please Use Trade Channels for Trade. If we address these individuals in a kind manner and just request it, and then request that they ask the next person they see to use the trade chat. Maybe just maybe we can clean this up. Now I get plenty of "STFUs" and "Why should I" but the matter of fact is, ANET wants this fixed and that is why they use WTS and WTB as chat filters. If you are changing your chat to W TS or the like you are conciously making an effort to ignore a system that is in place to keep the game healthy and to make it a nice environment to play in. As this is true (at least IMO it is) I furthermore encourage everyone to just not trade with anyone who deliberately uses all chat for trading. Show these people we are saying no. We are using the right channels because we want to improve the game for each other.
Why am I doing this you ask? Because someone has to and it isn't just me, it should be everyone trying to make the community better. If we all just "say it forward" and stop trading with the all chatters that deliberately avoid trade, well then we might just make a difference. And this requires no great amount of work on everyone's part. Just the next time you are in kaineng or LA or anywhere like that, take a few minutes, just 2 minutes or so and "advertise" to use the trade channel for trades. If everyone in the GWG community does so, wouldn't that maybe make a difference?
Please let me know if you support this guys! I really want to make the game a better place. And trust me ignoring a problem does not make it go away.

Gotta say that I don't have a problem spamming the spammers. On occasion when none of my friends are around to game with, I'll pick out a couple of those "all channel" traders and play mind games with them till they switch districts or ignore me.
Entertainment comes in all forms.

If we do this in a kind manner though and just inform them and persuad instead of harass we are making a solution instead of another problem.

Having everyone spam the Trade channel will just cause to want an Auction Hall because I doubt everyone else likes to see a deluge of red text bleeding into their eyes. If ArenaNet added different color text after each message in the Trade Channel then...I think there will be less spam in the Local chat box.
Mr.Interrupt
I dont feel this is pointless, I got about 20% of the people I sent tells to immediately swap to trade channels and some even said they liked the idea. As for everyone ignoring me I wouldnt say everyone. I actually had a few people harass me and I have subsequently reported them. I feel that if enough people say "this is enough" then they might actually get the clue.
Just got like 3 more people to swap to trade channel and thank me for doing what I am doing or apologize for their use of the All chat.

And to expand on the thought, how about alternate colours for buying and selling? Through the walls of red text, it's hard to figure out whether the advertisement is for purchase or sale. Many times I have given an offer to purchase an item, and I get a reply of: "I can't afford that, sorry"
Bad mix-ups o.o
Mr.Interrupt
I dont have any issue reading the trade chat. If it does go too fast you can stop the scrolling by moving the scroll wheel up and going through at your own pace.

By the way when I explained guidelines in a game to one person he laughed and said he already had a guild.

You really think this is the problem that needs addressing most?
What I want is a filter that will only allow me to see chat messages for which at least 60% of the words appear in a standard dictionary.

Onetime i was so annoyoed of the localspam, i made evil revenge. That was to spam whispers to people who used local chat to sell their fellblades, that says: ``WTS longsword of charr slaying dmg11-13 and +5%vs charr and shield armor 9 reg3 tact. You Buy?`` haha. I added funny ( to me atleast) spelling errors like sheild and amour. hah hah. That was great. Im from Finland, me speak bad english.

This really doesn't need to be a campaign. I make a point of politely pming especially annoying players and asking them to avoid the annoying behavior. Being patient and too the point works wonders. If you treat these people like adults they are less likely to act like kids.

...Or better yet, customizable filters for which we can define our own regular expressions. I would take great delight in being the first to come up with the expression set to filter out all generic guild recruiting messages. ("CAPE HALL PM FOR INVITE" would take out 90% of them.)
I'd like to see filters hooked to actions, too. So that, for instance, I can auto-ignore anyone who ever uses the word "n00b" and auto-party with anyone who says "Looking for [profession]" instead of "LFG."
Heck, I'd set one up to donate gold to everyone who said "Please" in public chat, and platinum to everyone who said "Thank you." This wouldn't impact my character's finances at all.
I see where you're coming from, Mr. Interrupt, but with all the raving idiocy in All Chat, I just don't see the existence of trade messages in it as the one thing that needs crusading against.

Some , well, most spammers are ignorant and will not listen to kindly, or any remarks.
Draco Hunt
Little Draco still wants his auction house
But for now he will do by just ignoring or eveding certain text and districts
I like the idea but the effect is probibly unsuccesfull or works for maybe 1 hour and then were back where we started. It is sad to say but this is how it generaly goes.
PS: Dont forget the people who get paranoid when you say something about there spam and go beserk in a full loaded district(does have somekind of entertainment value, or i'm just twisted ).

We do what we can with the power we have and that is all we can do.
WTS/WTB spam may not be the most threatening problem our game faces, but it is one of the most prevalent and infectious.
Small campaigns such as this are truthfully, rarely successful in the short term. Results don't come fast and furious. But over time, as more people join to aid them, they gain momentum. If truely inspiring and organized, small campaigns can become larger and permiate a more positive mentality.
People who want action now won't think this idea is worthwhile, or effective. But that's fine, there are other facets of assisting the community that will suit their style.
Also I would like to address something. I find it very disturbing that in multiple post people have heeded the call, but for the wrong reasons. People seem to see this as a "fight fire with fire" revenge campaign to punish the spammers.
You people know who you are, and I would like you to stop and realize that's not what the objective is. The point is not to whisper "STFU you stupid spammer!" it's to politely request they tone it down. We're going for a positive approch, not vengence. (Coming from me, I know, wierd.)
I'll certainly do my part while in game.
P.S. 20% is impressive for one guy. Finding the harrassment people is a good thing too, but you might want to compile a list w/screenies before sending in a report. Sending in 10-20 seperate reports would cause clutter. Just incase that's how you were doing it.

Flabber Babble
I'm in, and I have been for a while.
The logic here is if you can get one or two people a day to stop spamming the local chat with W.T.S. / W.T.B, then they might (just might) get one or two others to stop it as well.
ANet has made a concious effort to clean up the problem by filtering WTS/WTB, so personally, I find it rude to take the extra effort to type W TS and WT B just for the sake of ignoring the trade channel.
To Hidden in the Mist and Opeth11 yes! The fact that the names and the message are displayed in the same color makes it hard to tell where one message ends and the other begins, much less deciphering the names attached to them (who knows, that may be why most use the local chat now... Yellow Names: White Text, it's easier to read) So to expand, maybe the "trade" names should display in Black: WTS filters to Red text, WTB Filters to Gold Text (ha! Gold... get it? )
In the meantime, I'll keep trying to convince people that using local chat for trade is "uncool" and will make you a social outcast, forcing you into slave work, crafting shoes for Nike at $0.12 / hour; to pay the child-support that goes to your ex-wife who left you for a rich, younger, better looking Doctor named Bob... ya that seems to work .

That 20% reduction rate of spammers is a bunch of bull. You're telling me that you got a fifth of the allchat spammers in a busy district, say Kaineng dist 1, to cowtow to YOU, even though they are constantly being barraged by people asking them to use the trade chat? Not happening.
Thom
One point, some districts are "trade districts" (Lion's Arch D1). I have no problem with local chat spamming in those districts, since their existence is good for the community. I see this as drinking in a bar: if you are going to drink at least you are doing it in the right location.
XvArchonvX
Spam is a minor annoyance at most. I'm sure you can find something more constructive to do with your time other than lecturing others for using the wrong chat channel.

Avoid large districts when possible. LA Dist 1 for instance.
Learn to work the check marks on the chat window.
I have never really had a problem. If the spam is to much generally theres enough people to have a second district open and thats where you can find me.

On occasion I try to tell people not to post trades in 'all' but it always ends with me getting flamed, the other day I was told to "go and die" *sigh*
I fail to see why people can't just post it in 'trade' since people that wanna buy probably would look there.
There's still a trade channel in dist 1 why not use that?

I too don't like the trade spam on all chat. Not only does it make grouping harder, also valid questions are not being seen.
I make a point of switching off trade channel unless I want to trade, but I try to keep all channel open for any questions that fly by. I'm sorry to say that asking how to get to Cantha (a real common question in LA) in LA dis 1 will not get you the same odds to an answer as asking it in another district.
I can understand people wanting to sell their stuff, and if you don't know about trade channel yet (I too have explained its uses to would be trade spammers) I can forget that. The spammers numbering their sale spam, or adjusting the amount of exclamation marks get to my ignore list if it's only a few - otherwise my all chat goes off.
I make a point of not trading with those spamming in all chat, and I will happily explain spammers the use of trade channel. Lets make sure people can ask their questions on all channel, and be seen by the knowledgeable players that no longer need/want to switch their all channels off because of all the spam.

Also, I don't see not going to LA, Kaineng, Ascalon City, or Droknars dist 1 as "avoiding a part of the game". They're trade cities, that's it; no one's looking to party up for quests there. There is nothing to do there that you can't do in another district, except trade. Therefore, if you don't want to trade and/or don't want to see trade spam in allchat, it's only sensible to avoid those districts. Think of it like this, if you hate the bickering in the Random Arena town, it'd be silly to go there unless you actually intended on playing in the arena. Bit of a stretch for a comparison, but I think it works.

OP man you are going to have your nads in a sling.... However my guild will be doing something similar in the future in Ascalon. But we will be there to dirrect newbs and teach them some basics they might have missed. Along with that, maybe stop some all around bad behavior/report it. You however are touching on a whole new subject and while I commend you... I fear for your life -_o;;;; Date and time?
(Me and a guildie have already been volunteered for D1 of Ascalon for our plan... Best place to yell at the WTB/WTS spammers I suppose >_<)

Sorry dear, my post wasn't meant to be disrespectful, I just think it's going to be a real challenge and a half. And I didn't think you were going to spam (I did read your other posts for the most part.)
Anyways maybe I will run into you in a district somewhere along the way. GL!

to the OP more power to you.. if ppl think this isnt constructive so be it.. im with you 100%. it takes someone to stand up for what they think is right whether anyone else does or not.there is a resone for a TRADE channel and a CHAT channel. not everyone has to agree thats what makes this game great everyone can have a voice. if one persone sticks up for what they think is right more will join. do the right thing not because you have to but you can.

Well whenever I buy stuff I turn off all other distracting trades except for trade and team (when I team up with them to trade). If you're busy spamming in local you're just missing the opportunity of actual buyers and traders, I really don't know why anyone does it in the first place. :/
Curse You
I was in LA district 1 (Euro English 1) during the day and I got some (didn't stay for long, I had things to do) people to use trade chat. None of the people I whispered (politely) responded negatively, most semed to figure it out.
One person actually started questioning me in ALL chat and was told by others that their spamming was annoying.
I of course didn't get a very good "sampling" of people, as I only spent about 5 minutes on "clean up" duty, in a rather calm district (most people were using trade chat).

Constructive conversation is great and certainly has it's place. But I prefer just telling the All Channel WTSers to STFU and use the gd trade channel. Why? They're not stupid... they know trade channel is there. They know what it's for. I keep my trade and emote channel turned off for a reason. You want to sell me a max godly hammer? I want to sell you a clue... use the damn trade channel.
Still though OP, good luck. If Say it forward didn't sound so gay, I'd give it a try. We're at least working towards the same thing. It's like the Empire and Rebellion working together to fight crime or something.
