Im a noob at GW, but been playing rpg my hole life. Was hoping somone could suggest a good char just to help me out starting the game.

Since you have been playing RPGs all your life, you should in theory know which is the easiest to play.
Warriors are the easiest to play, but like all of the professions, it takes time to play it very well.
The most common combo is Warrior/Monk. Guildwars forces players in PvE (player vs Environment) to have a secondary profession. Most people new to the game will try this combo to see how warriors play and how the game is played in general. Monks are be default the way to keep yourself alive. The W/Mo is called by some "a noob build" or WAMMO.
Check the Warrior Forum and look at the Builds Thread.

the necromancer can be very strong in the game. ele's are so so. mesmer's can be difficult to learn. so can Rits. rangers are strong. assassin's die. be a warrior if you want to hit stuff.
