Hey there...my new computer is awesome....here are the specs...

3400+ AMD Athlon 64 Processor
160 GB Hard Drive
512 MB Ram (DDR)
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro GFX

...except there is one problem...my father bought a one year subscription for Norton Anti Virus for it. As many of you know, it is a major system hog.

My question to Norton users is this: How much does this really affect performance (I realize my PC will run GW fine, its just other games I am worried about). And secondly, I realize that you can disable auto protect and internet security for given amounts of time, but does this really help? Thanks!

yes if you disable the protection for the time that you are gaming .. it will help performance a ton.. always turn off any antivirus when playing an online game ....

I usualy disable my anti-virus totaly before i play any game; remember that you cant pick up a virus from playing online games :P

Then when i exit the game and im not going back on it for a while (say im using the internet still) i put the anti virus back on

It helps perfmance A LOT.

10-15% would be my guess while it is running. It all depends on what type of norton you have installed.

Also the age of the install makes a differance. As time goes on norton av actually slows the computer more and more. And you can not uninstall it fully.

If you double up your RAM to 1GB, that will help a lot as well, and having Norton run while playing probably won't affect perfornamce as much.

[hugs my low-resource Norton Corporate edition]

Lol. Yeah, I plan on buying more RAM when I get paid Thursday. I was just trying to play F.E.A.R. and 512MB just isnt cutting it....lol. Actually, when I exit the game I actually get a message that my system is running low on memeory. Funny thing is, I can run other games, such as Doom 3, on all high settings and never get drops in FPS. Oh well.

Shaders eat memory. Try running Battlefield 2 then you will understand. It can use upto 700MB ram. Some say more.
