A.net should grab one more thing from Magic The Gathering: a heavy focus on 1v1 tournament play.
Ladders, points, a different sigil as a reward.
HoH is nice, but if I'd really want to have success, I'd have to spend at least 80% time on social engineering and not more than 20% on actual gameplay.
A 1v1 tournament would complement HoH nicely: I could estimate the strenghts and behaviour of my opponents (- potential friends) more accurately, and so make participation in the HoH tournament a more natural outcome.
A simple 1v1 arena doesn't make much sense, but if the battle is more like a mini guild battle, it should work:
Customizable terrain, henches, defenses - and more timed events (accelerated weather effects?).
It could be very powerful.
Arena.net, please create a new strategy sub-genre!

Guild Wars is not balanced for 1v1, it is balanced for team battles, not solo, hence its name GUILD Wars. Giving rewards for winning an unbalanced tournament is not a good thing.
