A sigil is used to buy a guild hall, that is probably what is meant by an island.

When you get a Sigil and want to buy a Guild Hall, you get around 7 (maybe more or less, i forgot) different choices of a environment for your guild, some are deserts, some are jungles, cataboms and much more. And i think they are all located on the same island. I think thats what is meant by "buying an isalnd". Hope that helps.

Not that id really know, but I think you get to choose from more than one island, but that is only what ive heard

Well technically, the seven all look different and as such are different places, however when you look on your world map, they are all situated on the same island. South of Lions Arch and East of the competition arena

it's almost right at the center of the zoomed-out map.

Ok thanks people but where do i get the Sigil? and how does it work for buying the Guild Hall?

When you get to Lions Arch, go down to the docks, and take the "tour" of the islands.
Purchase the sigil from the sigil trader located on the island you like. Talk to the "ambassador" or whoever it is, and you now have an island, aka a guild hall.
Are you the leader of the guild? Then you have to be the one to actually hand over the money for the sigil. When we bought ours, it was 55k.
The other way is to win a sigil - but I will allow someone else to explain that since I do not know how that works.
If buying one, though, you don't want to end up guild-hall-rich and good-armor-poor, so save up a while, and wait until you are ready to do PvP/GvG with your guild. Besides a really cool meeting place, that is what the guild hall is really for (at the moment).

Thanks a lot.. i just did that. the SIGIL is at 48K at the moment.... Anyone knows where we could WIN a SIGIL?

You need to win the HoH... your team will get 3 sigil each time you win the HoH

HoH??? whats that?
samarium
The HoH is the Hall of Heroes. You know how every so often a message will scroll across your screen saying "<Guild Name> has won a battle in the Hall of Heroes and keeps the favor of the gods for America." or whatever? That's what that means.
If you win one of those fights and have your name announced, you get Celestial Sigils - worth quite a chunk of money. You can often sell them in Lion's Arch for over 50,000g each.
Just a heads up - don't fall for the latest Sigil scams. Check the item to make sure it really says "Celestial Sigil" and not "Family Sigil". The family sigil is a quest item that certain unscrupulous individuals have been trying to sell for lots of money. Surprise surprise when you get to the guild island and the Canthan Ambassador doesn't take it
