No previous problems, been playing since launch day.

Holy...I have NEVER seen anything like that before. Did you try the obvious steps like reinstalling your drivers and such?

Try installing new video drivers. If that doesn't work, try reinstalling guild wars. Your image files may have become corrupt.

Downloaded and reinstalled latest drivers, changed in-game settings to minimal, and restarted system. No previous problem and all other computer graphics are fine.
I'm thinking a streaming patch got hosed.

Video Card in question: ATI Radeon 8500 64 MB

have you tried another game? it looks as though polygons aren't being allowed to render correctly...which would mean your video card is pwned
