I heard a lot of talk about Channeling being the most awesome thing since sliced bread so I made a Mo/Me to try it out. So far I'm disappointed with channeling. Sure, it's cool if I'm soloing in PvE and completely surrounded by mobs but in PUG's (and I'd assume in PvP) your job as primary healer is to AVOID the mobs. If no one is around you, channeling does nothing to help your energy pool.
In addition, if you are surrounded by a significant number of creatures/players you'll get just as much benefit out of Balthazar's Spirit, if not more. Think about it this way:
With Balth's Spriti: 5 people around you means you get 1 energy for every swing of their weapon which could mean as much as 5 energy or more per second. You don't have to spend any attribute points for this to work and you can leave it on as long as you are being attacked.
With Channeling: 5 people around you only means you get 5 energy everytime you successfully cast a spell. Interupted spells cause you to lose energy and you still get nothing from channeling. You have to cast 1 spell / second for 8+ seconds (depending on how many attribute points you are willing to dump) to match the energy return of Balth's Spirit.
Now, I know there is a -1 Energy Pip when Balth's Spirit is on but that is completely negated whenever you're getting pounded on. When you aren't getting pounded on, turn it off and you're good to go.
As a lvl 13 Mo/Me I took channeling out for some gold runs and was constantly running out of energy. Balth's Spirit, however, kept me running long and strong.
Peace.

To get back on topic, some recomendations for Mesmer skills in a healer build would be:
Energy Tap: Steal 8+ (depending on attrributes) energy from target enemy.
Archane Echo: It's expensive (15 energy) but it sure is cool to have healing hands cast on two people at the same time.
Drain Enchantment: Remove an enchantment from an enemy and gain energy from it.
Inspired Enchantment: Steal an enchantment, gain some energy from it and then recast it on someone on your team.
Just some ideas...I am by no means the authority on mesmers as they are still very new to me.
