Vampiric/Zealous Question

I've never actually been hit by either one so I'm wondering something.

When you hit an opponent with say a 2:1 vampiric hilt, will you strike for normal damage +2 since you're draining 2 life? Or is it simply you gain 2 life whenever you strike with that weapon as it implies.

Vampiric will hit for damage +vampiric damage.

Zealous will simply give you the 1 energy not take it from them.
