Non-Combat Gameplay?
Sagius Truthbarron
I was just thinking that it would be nice to have some Non-Combat gameplay sometime in the near future.
Alot of games have Governmental, Crafting and such and such things to spend time doing between massacring stuff.
I'de really like to see Breeding for Beastmastery.
It would add a whole new area of depth to the game to have more Non-Combat systems, don't you think? It might even bring in actually female players instead of just people who.. Want to be female players >.>

ArenaNet stated AGES ago that they weren't going to have crafting and the like in the game.

I didn't specificaly mean crafting. That was one of the suggestions.
Really, even a more advanced, easier kind of exploring, I don't know. Something that takes you out of the "ordinary" of just using skills and fighting mobs, Pvping.
Hey, I think even weapon and armour naming is pretty fun. Then, of course, people will obviously abuse that. I remember in Star Wars Galaxies how I would hang around behind my friends and make them stuff "[Insert Name]'s Special Pants" "[Insert Name]'s Idiotic Sweater" and then force them to wear it around XD

I wouldn't mind crafting... Or breeding. XD
"Puppies for sale!"
"I'll take one."
"Here ya go, they make great pies."

Eh, crafting would be really cool. Weapons and armour would be crazy fun. That would solve farming for items.
Of course, if you did that, it would take away from the traders/merchants and then gold wouldn't exit the system. To fix that, maybe there should be a tax on the transactions that went straight out of the system. The crafted items, of course, would n't be droppable from inventory so that people can't just exit town, drop the gold/item and do the exchange that way.
These sort of things is something you would expect from an RPG... Someone said Guild Wars was revolutionary. I agree. RPGs with such little content are seldom published.

One thing for certain, I don't really feel like more fishing... Then again, I would get to hang out at a nice little waterfront, waiting for a bite all day, relaxing!

I would really like something else to waste time on, I think mini games are the ticket . But there is many other things. Maybe a casino. More non combat based items. Maybe play a sport of some kind, maybe races(as in run, not as in elf)?possiblities are endless and it would make a nice change of pace, particularly when some noob just aggro-ed tons of monsters or you spent 3 hours lfg for nothing.
Sagius Truthbarron
I don't really want to see anything too out of the way.
"Hey, I have an idea, King Tyranis or whatever your name is, let's make a horse betting track on top of this pool of tar!"
"Good idea, lad! We may be in war time - on the brink of extinction - but why let that put us down? We need betting parlors! And fluffy costumes!"

yeah crafters and non-combat professions arent really gonna fit in nor will they be needed. Star wars galaxies i admit is a great game with the players building the entire community of crafting, creating animals, weaponcrafting etc.
What i could consider adding to Guild Wars is more melee professions and more of a self-explorable area, instead of having to go where the devs want you to go...

GW definitely needs something else to do, especially when you've finished all the PvE content and just don't feel like doing PvP at the moment. I wrote a suggestion in detail in this post:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=32510
& the basic gist of it was this:
- questable armors (crazy difficult quests, where the reward is 1 piece of armor, that require full parties, strategy, teamwork, etc.. total of 5-6 quests to attain a full set of armor & fancy weapon.. same stats as 1.5k droknar's, but unique looks), can only be triggered after finishing ring of fire missions
- novely items (confetti, fireworks, more ale/food/beverages, furniture/decor for guild hall, flowers, gift items, town clothing, etc.. anything pretty much useless but fun)
- crafting that wasn't required by players and that didn't form an unfair disadvantage, basically crafting to create novelty items for ourselves - some way to create town clothing, training with a dwarf in shiverpeaks to become a bartender or cook and make ale, food, etc.. food doesn't give any benefits in pve or pvp (so no stat boosting), but does effects that can be visible to others - like, dwarven ale makes YOUR screen wobbly, but players can also see you sitting and saying "i'm the king of the world!".
- i also included a brief mention of fishing, so long as the fish wasn't some way to make money in the game. perhaps fish only had a value of 1 gold, making them worthless, but there could be some hidden mini-game where you win a badge or piece of town clothing (like a fishing hat) for catching 1 of each type of fish available in the game. maybe eating the fish would cause you to grab your stomach and sway because you ate raw fish and it didn't taste so good. lol. other mini-games too have been suggested in the game, guild hall chess/checkers, etc.
basically, anything to create a social atmosphere and a reason to play even when there's no content left, or you only have a few minutes to play, or just don't feel like killing everything in sight.

well they could add PVE quests/missions that do not involve fighting at all
maybe like an adventure game (exploring, mazes, moving things, hidden passages, riddles etc...)

Shagsbeard
They have these to some extent. You could take a level 20 in high armor/weaponry, change it's secondary and go back and do the level 3-6 quests in Ascalon. You could probably even design a set of skills to make it so you didn't even have to attack.

I agree with Sagius... until games start to move seriously away from strictly competitive gameplay (especially person vs. person killing) they will always be shy of becoming the art form they should become.
There are loads of different genres... but they haven't been fully maximized in multiplayer aspects yet.

I wish you guys well in finding the game you are looking for.
Devs keep doing what your doing, there's a lot of us who like what your doing and like pvp. And competition too.

Besides, GW does feature a marvellous system for non-competitive players that want alternative forms of play...it's called the 'quit' button, and it takes you to an entirely different realm (more sci-fi you could say, though set in the present day). This realm is also mostly f2p, though some of it is pay monthly. There is an incredible marketplace, where additional chapters (called video games) can be purchased from either virtual or player vendors. These additional chapters take the form of multitudes of different mini-games, each specifically tailored to different play styles.
Most non-competitive content is lame*, you might as well be playing progress quest, chatting on msn, browsing the web or playing one of the fifty thousand EQ clones out there.
*PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

By that same token, PvP is lame

But really, I found it best never to question why you are playing a game you enjoy. It tends to suddenly get extremely boring.

PvP is the RPG equivalent of the FPS deathmatch (or team deathmatch in this case) and imo it's great (spot the FPS player )
