Geezus, I'm so tired of people screaming about free speech. Free speech does not mean that you can say whatever you want. There's no such thing. As someone has mentioned slander, threats, etc etc are NOT covered by free speech.

ANet is NOT stifling free speech at all since GW is privately owned by them. It's their game, it's their rules. And they havent stifled anything more than what you'll see on TV.

If you're going to scream about free speech, at least understand what it's all about. People take the meaning WAY too literally.

Of course the same could be said about speaking it I guess

My personal favorite are those that put spaces in the words to try and get around filters or whatever. What a complete waste of time

meh...I probably wasn't raised correctly...I have an awful time with using F*** every third word...I make a conserted effort not to type them out...but I type faster than I think so I swear quite often even while online. Normally I go back before I hit post and delete the expletive...but in towns and outposts I definately swear more often than I should. I do apologize for my foul language though

F*** was just part of our vernacular growing up...must have something to do with region.

Am I to believe you mean that hate speech and profanity is, on the other hand, NOT? ...

uhmm, no.

You come to my game, my server, my house, you follow MY rules, not yours. You go to ANets game, ANets server, ANets house, you follow THEIR rules, not yours.

Let me rephrase it:

In my house, my morals and rules are in place.
On my server, my rules and morals are in place.
In THEIR game and on THEIR servers (meaning ANet's), their rules and "morals" are in place.

Poorly worded the first time. Thank you for allowing me to clarify.

I'm with you, Obsidian. I can understand the odd unprintable word escaping when you drop a hammer on your toe or some such, that's almost a reflex, but it takes conscious effort to sit there and flame away in chat.

I would agree with the "Free Speech" arguments about online mediums if the IEEE came out with a new law that said any and all code must be heard, even the malicious and the not well thought out, this would include trojans, bots, viruses, and even cursing.. go figure.

But.. since the IEEE does not want the internet blowing up instantly, they put down a set of rules to keep things working. GW and ArenaNet are building up their set of rules to keep their game running; without them, GW would stop working and their business would fail.

"Free Speech" may only be successfully argued when a "Free Speech" clause is inherent in the medium you are wishing to express it on. USA has a "Free Speech" clause which is the first amendment; the Internet does not have this clause; Guild Wards does not have this clause. "Knowledge is power!"

there are lot of very bad players who do incredibly stupid things to ruin one's day in Guild Wars. i'm not talking about "cursing", i'm talking about them playing the game itself in the stupidest way imaginable

in my view these people should expect and completely deserve to be cursed.

is anything being done to penalize them? them being those who play stupidly. and if not, why not? they are far worse for ruining one's experience than a cursing player is

furthermore, in my view it is extremely hypocritical to call a game Guild Wars and then say people can not curse or flame. in Wars , people get killed and all sorts of other atrocities happen. cursing or flaming etc. is just "small potatoes" compared to what Wars entail. hence a game with the word Wars in the title should have a prerequisite that people can say what ever they want to.
Can you be more specific? It is difficult to understand your hand-wavering descriptions.
