Misconception of Items?
Nightsorrow
One thing that cropped up when I was looking to trade today (in Droknars Forge, so that rules out the large newb-quantity .. at least I thought it did):
What is the obsession with Gold Weapons? Sure they CAN have fantastic stats on them, but when people say "WTB MAX DMG GOLD WEAPON !!!!!" - why gold? I find it very frustrating when I'm trying to sell a pretty good hammer, but it's Purple not Gold - so that rules out a chunk of the buying market.
It just irritates me. 1 person I was talking to didn't want to even look at the hammer I have, based on the fact that it wasn't gold. When I asked him why he only wanted a gold one - he responded with "they are best" then "best stats". Well if I had a Gold Hammer with worse stats than this Purple Hammer - would he be interested then? He couldn't even name the stats he wanted.

Just for the rarity. It's like why people have 15k armor. Yeah, it makes selling a lot harder, but oh well. The economy is so messed up anyways I don't know how anyone even has the time or patience to bother selling stuff. I gave up out of boredom.

I would rather get a clean mx dmg weapon as a drop and add my own mods than spend an hour and 50k for a gold weapon.

The vast majority of people playing GW are sheep, and moronic sheep at that. They slobber over a +30 staff wrapping, and sneer at a +22. They are willing to pay through the nose for an item that will do 15% more damage while your health is over 50%, yet ignore an item that will "only" do 14%.
There is no single item I would consider "fantastic", or "Godly" or any other adjective. The difference in damage between 14% and 15% is statistically irrelavant, yet most people will pay huge sums for the latter.
It's sad, really.

I get collector weapons. Best there are, cheap and efficient.
Only downside is that they can't be salvaged (and they're "only" blue )

Well gold swords are usually maxed out with a buch of extras besides the mods that come on it.

Only a few people realize that collector items are the best. They always come with perfect stats. For example, I have not ever seen a 20% fast cast mod on a staff other than a collector staff.
For me, it is function over look. The other day in Fissure, my ranger was using a poisoner's ascalon blow (long bow collector version) of fortitude and someone else was using a crappy gold storm bow that he payed like 50 plats for. He made fun of my ascalon bow even though it has some of the best mods you can get (eg. 15% > 50%). To make the matter worse for him, he pulled every foe to us and then die. Seriously does anyone care if your equipments are godly if you suck?

Yea, last night i've been trying to sell a purp max dmg wingblade sword with +12% while hp > 50% mod on it, got a few msg asking if it were gold. said purp, and never heard from them again... in the end the merchant bought it, i just dont bother selling it anymore.

The other day I was in LA selling a max fiery dragon sword of fortitude with +14% in stance or some such bonus. Before someone finally bought it, 4 people whispered me saying they'd buy it, and then gave up when they saw it wasn't gold.
I imagine these people walk around showing their weapons to others in the trade window all day.
It's not like 15k armor at all, since it doesn't actually make any difference outside the trade window. You can't even show off to a whole district while afk.

I go purely by looks. when i mean looks i mean things other players can see so when buying fissure armor if you can afford it, thats cool buying a gold weapon thats identical to a purple is..... well theres no point. Your weapon doesn't get a higher pixel count, it doesn't look any different to the monsters who head your lopping off because its gold... it makes no sense, just makes me want to smack some people..

hehe after reading the first two post then skipping to write my own i realized the one directly above basically says the same thing...

Yes, they're alike in that there's no 'true' benefit (meaning that a weapon's color makes no difference in the mechanics of combat, likewise for an armor's looks).
The aspect of self-satisfaction is where I believe they differ, though. Some people will have more fun playing when they can show off to others, so to these people 15k armors will be worth more than 1.5k armors. Other people have more fun playing when they can show off to themselves, so to these people it's important that when they press "I" they see a lot of gold text.

I personally don't understand why 1% damage difference makes it work thousands of gold more, maybe that's just me :/
I like having a gold weapon... it looks very cool, but the only time I'd spend money on items for looks is for relatively rare things like eternal bows and crystalline swords.

Gold weapons/shields/focus items only diference is they have gold letters instead of purple/blue, they dont look diferent and it does not mean they are maxed out in dmg stats ...

collector items are where it's at. cheap (except maybe in time getting to/from the collector and getting the items to trade) and generally way better stats than any drop. I've yet to see a "gold" 20/20 item. the only thing golds sometimes have going is they may have some nice innate mods that you cant add to the collector items.

droknar isn't the greatest place in the game to go to get away from the noobs
that said...everyone thinks gold items are THE UBER BEST UBER WEAPON OF UBER DOMINATION UBER UBER UBER UBER UBER...
I sold some kid a clean max dmg gold rams hammer for 10plat...did I feel bad about it? absolutely not...I offered him a MUCH MUCH better purple for less with a +28 Fortitude...he wanted the Gold.
