Clientside Mapping..
Synthos
Just a bit of wishfull thinking.
I know that this would never ever happen in Guild Wars, but dont you think that Clientside mapping would take a big step in helping Guild Wars along or even save the game? I used to LOVE to map in a game called Tribes 2, I actually stopped playing the game and just exclusively mapped. Just think about the possibility of client side maps streamed to you and provided to you to download as needed. It would definately solve the lack of PVE.
The reason why Tribes 2 lasted so long is because there was CONSTANTLY new and exciting content, some of the new maps absouloutely rocked and there were very talented mapmakers lending there talents to the game.
I know that this will never happen, because Areanet seems to be as stubborn as my grandma with issues. And i could just imagine the exploits that this might cause. But for now its just a bit of wishfull thinking..
Why is RPG games so plauged with exploits! In FPS most people dont even care about exploits because if your good you can match it, it just isnt an issue in most games. ANd trust me, as soon as i get my new computer, im gone from this game.

Are you insinuating Tribes 2 was "good", and not the vile bastian of all that was crappy sequal?
However, you do bring up a good point about creating levels. I have no idea how it would fit in, and if ANet would even release the tools it uses, and even if it doesn't just use super expensive pro mapping tools rather than some map gen tool made in-house. It would be kinda fun to run some user submitted maps, and maybe some interesting scenerios, a-la StarCraft's feature of the same name. Never could get enough of Matrix Maps....

For every good Tribes map you played, there were probably at least 50 bad, horrible, or unbearable ones. Same with UT/UT2004, and it would be the same in this case too. I'd really rather not be forced to play crap to get further into the game

But i thought 2 was pretty good. Besides, all the old tribes 1 maps were redone in 2 anyway.

I can imagine GW turning into Warcraft 3, where everyone plays plagiarised, crappy maps, plus DotA.

I dont know about you, but i can certainly think of some good maps. Ones that actually utilize the other classes besides warriors and monks. The missions in the game are actually quite boring and similar gameplay wise, i can definately think of some very interesting missions.
DrSLUGFly
perhaps they could have maps, and you designate the level and type of mobs that appear and where they appear, after which you submit it and on the server side the mobs and drops are added. This would help keep people from intentionally designing exploits and cheats perhaps.
Dude!!! I last an average of 2 or 3 months for games, some only a couple weeks. because of DOTA and DOTA alone, WC3 lasted me nearly 2 years!

Well, if they designated a special area where you could talk to an NPC and select a list of custom maps to explore, I suppose that could be interesting. Although I can just see people creating maps and piling on mobs of high level melee creatures eager to be farmed to death. Or maybe a map full of 300 chests! Woohoo!

If they could it would be a master stroke, just releasing a toolkit, and new textures to use every few months.
As the main prog lang used is C++, they could go down the path NWN went. As a game NWN beats GW hands down as a rpg. For PvP GW is the best there is currently on the market, but as for RPG, there are alot of better titles out there.
3 years and still going strong thousands of online servers, enough variety in the user content so that you can find everything a RPG / Roleplayer could want ever need.
The graphics are dated and thats its only down point.
The reason it is so good, is the freedom you get with the toolset. Player made content is a mixed bag, there maybe alot of rubbish, but there is also a lot of stuff which actually surpasses the original game specs and designs.
Also you actually find alot of the really good stuff is made by not only hobbiest, but freelance games devs who are either out of work or taking a break.

warcraft3 is something special. Dota was nice until they uberized everythin.
i also love DawnoftheDead3. u can up to lvl 99.
i would be so happy if they released toolsets for GWs!
& let us make our own customs.
would u want to play a charr barbarian? very ferocious.

rofl @ your comment about FPS.
Counter Strike is the single most hacked game in the history of video games....the exploits in that game are so rampant CAL has to change their rules multiple times a season.
I do agree with you, however it would need to be controlled mapping. i.e. you make and submit a map for approval before it were streamed to live players. ofcourse this would require going through beta stages for every map created. Ofcourse this would be quick and effortless for alot of the maps that get submitted as the majority of them would rubbish nobody but the creator would want to play anyway. But for those maps that were truly special...this process could be quite lengthy.
and can I ask who is going to write the map editing tool that will allow your average joe(or even your above average joe with programming experience) to do this?

It would skyrocket the games popularity... people just love having something to do even the tedium that is building a map.
If they did this kind of update then they may as well allow 'open instances' so you don’t have to wait 3 bloody hours before you can play with any of your guild friends. (Because they are all "in a quest at the moment")
Then think of the potential and excitement the real role-playing community would get.. forget the 'role playing district'
How would you even go about trying to convince ANet to do all that?.. it would change the game completely.. if they did that of course then they wouldn’t have much to sell you anymore would they? Think about the anticipation that is built up over just two new maps!
I believe ideas like this would make guild wars a great game, as opposed to a unique game, but I suspect they would have to scrap purchasable expansions and go the charge monthly route ... they aren’t about to give up on their original ideas.
But we are still allowed to dream

Do you people honestly think a custom map builder would work for Guild Wars?! Come on...
DrSLUGFly
to solve the "uber farm" map problem (money maps, in starcraft) they could have inherent limitations on # of mobs per map (based on size) and limitations on proximity of mobs (based on cumulative level or something...) and definately on number of and proximity of chests/wreckages.
edit: a custom map maker would add years to the lifespan of this game, both in multi and single player. And it would take some of the stress off the dev team to keep up with player hunger.

What I meant by my comment is that gimmicky, easy to grasp maps will become popular, and you won't be able to find very many people to play the original maps with you.
Vilaptca
Uhh...this would never work with an MMO game. Sounds awesome and all, and yeah, people would make some sweet maps. Yeah, people would make horrible maps. People would make maps easily exploited and people would make the most stupid, dull boring map ever.
It would take everything away from the game. The only way I could see this being possible is if the map size all of a sudden exploded, and people had to buy land to make maps. Kind of like Guild Halls...but anyone could visit.
Sounds interesting, kudos to an idea I've never read on this forum fifty times. Just seems too...not the right game...as does most other ideas...

Hm...I can see custom maps working for PvP after sending it to Anet, kind of like the HL2DM map contest Valve held a while back. I think PvE maps should still be designed by an official organization though, too much chance to exploit.
