Problems
1. Sellers constantly flood the chat channels with solicitations;
2. Sellers congregates at common areas, making it impossible to interact with other players without running into peddlers;
3. Sellers or Buyers could only see solicitations on one server, at particular hours. If I play odd hours, I would miss quite a lot of opportunity to buy/sell.
The above indirectly leads to an imperfect market where buyers of certain items may not able to meet sellers of same items.
Proposed solution
1. Have a Market District where people want to sell/buy would go.
2. Market District would be like international district, all players of all continents could go there to trade.
3. Enforce Market District by disallow trading in other district.
4. OPTIONAL: players can set up "stall" where they could "show" there wares. Buyers would only need to browse through the stalls. This reduces the verbal solicitations.
5. OPTIONAL: sellers would have to put price tags on items (or "make offer" tag).
6. OPTIONAL: an imperfect snapshot of items for sale and the price. Imperfect here in the sense it may not reflect accurately the inventory. This allows players to have a price range in comparison
7. OPTIONAL: the traders (NPCs) would have a profit for being "convenient" (players wouldn't need to go to Market District). But its price reflect the market. Plus, NPC traders would have "cool" items to trade. NPC traders/collector in mission would have even cooler items to trade and I even suggest that certain cool items be customized to the person.
EDIT: This is not in conflict with Auction House idea (which I think is great) but actually a complement of that idea.
Market District

Great idea.

One that I have thought worthy all along. Thanks for putting coherent words to it.

well it seems giving them their own chat funtion did not work, but to seperate them from other player... i think your on to something here, have an internet cookie *hands a cookie to Lorelei *
DrSLUGFly
great idea except for number 3
I'm running somewhere through the desert with a mate, and a fantastic gold axe drops... I'm an ele and my mate wants it. So he says, dude, I'll give you 5k right now for it and so I hand it over for 5k (prolly not much for a great item, but it's my mate). The same could be true if he's playing in another area, I find it, know he wants it so I ask for him to hook up with me at my next outpost...
eliminating "trading" altogether is too far to go to eliminate buying and selling... but in all other respects, this is a great idea and I fully support it.

Eliminating trade "in town" You could trade in mission.
In town, it is so easy to just go to another district (to the market district) and back.
*takes cookie and devour it greedily*

I like your ideas but they address the symptoms rather than the problems.
The real problem for all the junior Rockefellers out there is that supply outweighs demand. There's great loot everywhere. The reason people flood the chat channels with solicitation is because the majority of intelligent people know that they can easily find whatever loot they want via PvE or via a friend.
Selling loot in GW is utterly pathetic for that very reason. Not that many people pay attention to the trade channel because they know that only an idiot would pay 60K for something that anyone can find.
The trade channel would work very well if max damage weapons were actually rare. People would scower the trade channel hoping for that one guy to put up his max dmg super-axe of mass destruction.
As it is now, most everyone I know who's at least made it to the desert has at least 2 max damage weapons for each of their toons.
No demand = No need for trade channel = overanxious sellers who spam chat.

Idea approved. I like it and could see this working. Hopefully if this was put into place it could put a stop to the flooding of WTS and WTB I get whenever I enter a district forcing me to turn off the Trade and Local Chat windows.
Mavrik
yeah, give them their own district cause its hard reading through all the WTS or WTB in areas when your simply LFG and have to read through everything for something that might help you.
