It depends. The newest uber rare item is the Ruby Encrusted Platinum Gauntlets of Pimpness for Warriors. The crafter, who resides the post-searing catacombs, requires 1 Platinum and 8 rubies to craft this. The only known benefit of wearing these gauntlets is that you will not have to pay anything for a female player's services(ie a private dance).
Which leads me to my final point. People who only have gold may be willing to offer a lot of gold for 1 platinum.
