My guild uses the old version of Ventrilo. Why? Simple. Its free! We have a friend's computer that hosts the server and we can all hang out and talk it up while we're playing in-game or just talking things up while we're waiting for this game to reach the masses (retail). No use paying when you don't have to and it works just fine.

I am not sure i undertsand what you guys mean. Can TS only be used on servers that are created by players, or will Anet have servers that players can use TS for free? Can TS be used on the reg servers that used text? If I buy the GW CE, will I be able to use TS on the Anet public servers, or will I have to pay to talk? I would really appreciate some clarification on this matter.

There are plenty of threads about teamspeak. Next time simply use the search button. Since no one seems to know that the search button is lonely~

Arena is offering teamspeak server that will host your chat for 3 months free. After that you will need to give them some $ to continue using it.

Teamspeak is free, you can use it as long as you are not going to charge anyone to use your server. IF you are going to charge someone to use your server, then the Teamspeak developers would like some of that $$ you are going to charge depending on how many users you plan on hosting for.

So, why use Arena's and then pay after 3 months if it is free? Well some people do not want the hassle of setting a server up on thier own system. Some simply do not want to use thier bandwidth runing a server to interfere with their already limited bandwidth. Some people just don't know any better.

So how hard is it to set up the Teamspeak server? It is not hard at all and there is excellent help forum at goteamspeak.com .

Then why would someone pay for it? See above.

How much bandwidth does it use and will it affect me? I am sorry I do not have the proper tools to test exactly how much bandwidth is being used when 5 or so people join a teamspeak server that is hosted on my pc.

Are there any other free server I can use so that I do not have to pay? Yes there is, when you download the client you can search public channels free servers have no password. Some of the server require you register with them and they will then create you a channel free for you and your guild and give you a password. Some free servers do not have any requirements, you can create your own channel and set your own password.

Hope this answers your questions, if not.. try heading over to the teamspeak website and check out their faq.

UPDATE- I spoke to one of the people that handles the TS servers and it appears they will be rebooting the TS web list server as soon as they can to see if that resets the web list. In the mean time, if you want/need to test your client they said you can login to TSs' own voice server at:

voice.teamspeak.org

Let me know if you need more help!

This is exactly what I, my family, and a friend did, Darkmane, and it worked like a charm for us. I have a small network setup with 4 pc's and with my friend in Wyoming, we had a passworded channel set up on one of the free TS clan servers. It was private, quiet, and really made playing together nice. I would REALLY recommend setting up some sort of voice comm for use with GW, or any of the online multi-player games. You don't know what you're missing if you don't.

Unfortunately as I tout how great Teamspeak is, the teamspeak list server appears to be down and 'getting a list' of servers is currently not possible; As you will get an 'error getting list' message when attempting to load the public server list. However, as I stated before, once you have the server in your address list, you do not need to 'list servers' to find that server again.

This same "error getting list" showed up a few times during my dinking around with the client last week, but it never lasted for long back then. Fortunately, I saved about 5-6 IP's in my address list, and they still connect just fine. So when the servers list shows up again, it may behove us who use TS to put a dozen or so server IP's in our address list, just for insurance.
