I have several skills in the Beast Mastery area. Two of which I cannot tell when they are working. Call of Haste and Call of Protection. I use them and see them recharge. But within a few seconds of the battle, after I've lost track of time I can't tell if the effect is still on my pet or if its already worn off.
I click on my pet and I don't see any effects on him. So I cast them again, immediately click on my pet and still don't see them affecting him.
Is there something I am doing wrong? Do I have to select my pet before casting these skills? Comfort animal works without having to select him, so I would guess not for all the others as well. But I may be wrong.
Can't see effects on my pet.

Why would you see the effects on him by clicking him? (I would like to see somewhere where you can see what is on them, but you can't)
If you time the attacks he is doing, you can tell Call of Haste is working.
All the pet shouts are designed to last roughly as long as the recharge, so if you can use it again, do so.

Look at it this way-
Play a warrior and use "Watch Yourself" and click on ally-
There's no visible effects while the shout is on them, but the effect is there.
Unlike your pet, though, an ally can control+click it and say, "I have "Watch Yourself" on me!", and it affects you as well.
If your pet were a human player, they could do the same, but unfortunately, they're not and offer you no feedback.

Calls of haste and protection seem to have the same range as comfort animal. This range is very long, at least twice as big as your aggro bubble (some say that the range of a ritual is about 2.5x aggro bubble, pet skills might match that). You will know the call has expired when the skill is recharged. If using oath shot, serpent's quickness, or quickening zephyr, it's up to you to figure it out, unfortunately. Rangers aren't the only ones that might encounter this.

Just watch your shout's cooldwon. Gauge how long the call lasts compared to how fast it can recharge, that should help you figure out if its still working. f you get high enough BM, the call should outlast the recharge, meaning that you can just reaplly every time you get the chance and always be 100% sure that your pet has it.
