Hello,
I have started a new charcter E/M. The other one is W/R.
The W/R was easy in respect of what items I could use for weapons etc.
Now with my new char I am confused to what he can use and equip. Rods I know and there it stops.
Can someone please tell me what items I can equip and what they do ?
For that matter that would be useful for other professions too.
I had a search on the net but cant have been looking in the right places.
What items for Elemental ?

Anyone can equip any weapon, but that doesn't mean anyone can be good with it.
For example, Swordsmanship is required to get a boost in the damage a sword does. Since Swordsmanship is a warrior attribute, only someone who has warrior as one of their classes can make much use of a sword. The same holds true of Axes, Hammers, and Bows (Bows are for rangers, not warriors); they each have an attribute that gives them their power.
Wands and staves are a different creature. They have no attribute tied to them. Instead they get a similar boost based on your experience level.
Eventually, as you get to stronger weapons, they will have an attribute requirement next to the damage. For example, a sword with 13-21 (req. 9 Swordsmanship). If you have at least 9 Swordsmanship, it will work with a base damage of 13-21. If you are under 9, it will work like a beginner's sword (something like 2-4). Swords, axes, hammers, and bows all use requirements of the same attribute that gives them a boost. With wands and staves, the requirement will be some mage attribute

Generally, you're going to want to grab a staff or wand/focus that has lots of energy and a good mod (%chance to recharge or cast faster is always good). It's good to get something that you fit the requirements for (otherwise, you'll do less damage with it), but it's not vital. I wouldn't expend too much effort finding something good, at least until you get to the Desert.
The best staffs, wands, and focus items in the game can be acquired from Collectors in the Desert and Southern Shiverpeaks. Info about them is here:

Wands/canes and staves do indeed have attribute requirements.

the biggest thing for equipment for an E is something that will benifit your skills because thats how the majority of your damage will be dealt, as a fire mage i chose a insightful fire staff of fire magic 11-22 dmg decreased casting time of fire magic (20%) decrease recycle time of fire magic(20%) increase fire magic skill (13%) energy +5 and energy +10. everything in my weapon was built towards helping me be a better fire mage.
