I just got the game and will be starting up tonight and looking for suggestions or things to avoid on making my first character. Thanks. In the past I've played Asheron's Call and Diablo 1/2 so these types of games arent new to me.

first time through. play what interests you, worry about "uber" builds once you beat the game once.

Thanks I'm leaning towards warrior for primary and still debating my secondary.

Almost all the class combinations are good, although a few (E/W; N/R) make it difficult to find a good build. A Warrior is a good choice for a first timer. I'd recommend a Monk or Elementalist primary. W/Mo are very popular, because you can heal yourself while tanking. W/E are also popular, since you can use the numerous armor spells to tank well and there are also good damage combinations, like using a Hammer to knock the enemy down and following up with Aftershock. W/Me, W/N, and W/R also work well, but they are a little harder to play than a W/E or W/Mo.

Be a monk! There aren't enough of them and they are the most helpful component of a team. You'll have no trouble finding groups to play with and people will be very thankful of your help.

Also, it's fun to keep everybody alive, or let them die if you don't like them.

i don't recommend you to be a monk as a first timer unless you like to help others, even getting blamed for their faults. if your sole purpose is to get into a group as a monk, you'll be frustrated (not always, but the chance is higher comparing to other builds).

W/Mo is a good choice for new players.

i pretty much agree with everyone else. my first char was a w/mo. easiest to get use to and learn the ways of the game.

You have to like watching the red bars to be a monk primary, and people will run around expecting you to save thier butts. Very stressful.

I'd say become a monk. Its quite easy to play once u get the hang of it, and plus u'll get into groups far more easily and will be able to see what this game has the offer the quickest.

The first character i completed the game with was a monk. Easy and simple it was.

My first character is a ele/war (not the easiest set up for a first time although I am really loving that character now that I found the right way to play him) but just for variety I started a monk/nec and am just about to 8 but I'm playing solo/henchmen so there are no stresses. (have done healers in other games and it's not for me). I cuss the npc healer enough as it is hehe. Like someone said, pick what interests you. Heck try them all. You can always change (deleting is easy). Although I don't tend to jump into guilds I would recommend one for GW as there isn't much community going in towns save for immature nonsense which includes those facinated with the dancing of the emotes (and the horny ones search for fulfillment from the pseudo opposite sex).

As you can see, many different opinions, many different options.

Some people say W/Mo, some say W/R, some say E/Me some say M/? etc

Since it only takes about 1 hour to get a character to post-searing, i'd suggest going though all the professions, and then going though the secondary professions, and try those out.

My actual first character was a ranger, after that I went through all the secondary professions and liked the elementalist Firestorm AOE, so chose it. But, i soon realised it was boring for me :P and i only used the ranger skills.

I like Necro's for the first timers because you can animate bone horrors to help you out and then theres the Blood Magic which will allow you to keep yourself healed.

Sleepless In Cyberspace (SIC)

My First and most powerful char is War/Ranger
Just an all around butt kicker

My Second is a Necro/Mes
Suckem dry, and fill yerself back up at the same time.

Id start with one of these two.

He is a few noob tricks to help you along.

When you are in pre-sear. When you first go out to kill. KILL EVERYTHING
Before you go back in. You can loot and sell up the hill is merchant.
You can make 1500g and lvl 4 before you ever do a quest.

Next cash in any quests you do EXCEPT profession quests. Once you know the lay of the land, you can kill bears or ice critters, on clear the cataclombs and make lvl 6-7 in a few hours.

THEN cash in your quests. That will bring you to lvl 8-9 now yer ready to go forth into post searing.

You should do fine and you don't have to start off with a warrior/monk. Starting off here is gonna be the same as it was for you in AC. You kill stuff, do quests, get to know people, sell all the items you get to build up gold.

Pick what role you really like to play in a MMO and base your first char on that. Then get as good as you can at it. No matter what happens, at least you'll enjoy it.
