Its a great skill and I use it all the time because exactly, it never misses and deals some good damage without any real casting time and recharges quickly to.

Try this out, cast immolate on a foe that is in a group of foes, and use the mesmer skill epidemic (which transfers all negative conditions of a foe to nearby foes) and set everyone on fire
