But there's a second side to the story: people who message you with "Are you there?", instead of stating their damn purpose, need to be slapped. A question of "are you there?" can only be ignored, or answered along the lines of "yes, I'm here now", which usually is given when the original inquirer already forgot all about the inquiry and replies with a helpful "????". If you so desperately want to ask a question, ASK IT! That way when the person returns behind their keyboard, they can give a straight answer to your question.

Is it just me or does his avatar really resemble a sort of role call for your local channel 9 news? Could swear I had an anchor man named Mike Edwards once.
