CPU Cooling Programs For Pentium 4?
Neutral Tyrant
I know there're programs out there to help your computer cool down and I really need this. When playing a game such as Guild Wars, my computer can shoot up to about 66 degrees Celsius (http://mbm.livewiredev.com/download.html). I added new thermal paste recently that only seemed to work for a little while. And the CPU itself is not even old. My case isn't exactly an open one with alot of ventalation but I can't correct that now. So if anyone can please give me methods, CPU cooler programs that work for Pentium 4, etc. it'd be really appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know...I've never heard of any software that could make your CPU run cooler, I suppose you could underclock it, but beyond that, I don't know. How many fans do you have, where are they, and what direction are they running in? You'll want to make sure you're getting good airflow, keep it a good foot or so away from the wall, and have you intake and outtake fans balanced appropriately.

There is an example of some I found but I don't think they run with Pentium 4.
As for underclocking, i've never done that, any negative effects to that?
I believe have 2 fans, I don't think my Radeon 9800 Pro's fan is plugged in (it doesn't have any where to be plugged in). My tower's fan sending air out and my CPU's fan which sends heat away.

to be honest...the benefits of a program like that aren't worth it. All it does is put your CPU in suspend mode when you aren't using it....so it's not going to do anything while you are playing GW...
Secondly...I'd never run a program that used your CPUs Ring0....Ring0 has all privelage rights..anything running in it can execute code without being checked. I wouldn't trust someone elses shotty code in that Ring of my CPU.

you need to find out what ia actually causing the overheating in the first place
take off the side of the case and aim a small fan at it to cool the inside of the case and see if that makes a difference

Also blow off the fans and heatsinks with a can of compressed air. The dust bulds up on the heatsinks and acts like insulation keeping the heat in the sink not letting the heat dissapate.
I also took one of the front blanks out of my machine, The blanks where an extra CD drive would go. This has allowed better air flow into the case but the case does get dustier faster.

If it's a Pentium 4 based on the Prescott core then you are actually about normal for load temperatures. The suggestions above may help, especially blowing off the cooler itself. You might need to look at 1) an improved CPU cooler (Zalman, Swiftech, and Thermalright are some of the better names. All of these can be bought at places like newegg.com, frozencpu.com, etc) and 2) improved case cooling (which could mean some "modifications" or just replacing some of the existing fans for better ones).
In regards to the "software" cooling, usually all those programs do is underclock the CPU or make it rest when it's not being used. Neither of which I would think you would want when playing GW. I could give you some better suggestions if you would like spec's on your system (procesosr speed, Dell Optiplex 666 etc).

I specialize in pc cooling what are your pc specs Ie: cpu chip, gpu. What are you looking at for temp changes, sounds like your GPU not CPU. GPU's operate at much higher temps than the cpu and its normal to see magor spikes. Another question to ask yourself " Are you seeing any ill effects? If not then your probably running normal temps. Usuqally the only people looking at cooler systems are overclockers "Making your system run faster than manufacterer specs."
If you want there are better cooling systems than air cooling. You can use water based, or peltier based. But if you don't know what your doing have someone who does do it for you, otherwise you can fry your rig. I'll do it for you but its not cheap.

expensive to install a water cooling system? it takes all of 5 minutes....

I was meaning for him to send it to me personally to do considereing the shipping costs. Plus good water cooling systems run $100.00 on up. Not the cheap compared to a $20 heat sink fan.
But I also waterproof the mobo and components to protect against water condensation. A must if your dropping your pc to temperatures below ambient air.

ahhh I gotcha....ya shipping it around the country isn't the most economical way of doing it.
my air cooling system cost me well over $100

Yeah I kind of figured as well a program wouldn't help, I just hoped for the quickest thing. When playing a game such as Counter Strike: Source, my temp can hit 70 degrees celsius(yes that is hot) and the game gets very slow and choppy. I have a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro so it shouldn't be like that. When playing Guild Wars it can be 60-66 so I feel as though maybe GW isn't running as it should either.

Loviatar runs about normal for air cooling. The lowest I've ever been able to get with air cool is 30C. and that was during winter when my house temp is low to begin with. These temps are fine. Now if you are getting higher temps than this 1 of three things are occuring.
1.)your using a P4 prescott, higher temps are normal for that chip, but it sounds like your not so option 2 wil apply
2.) Your case does not allow sufficient air flow. This could be cause you got it jammed pack full of wire and your case is just to small. Solution: Get a better case and get rounded cables. I use the Thremaltake Shark, it comes with 20mm fans already installed, looks great and has awesome air flow. Seriously you can have the worst heat sink out there and it will still stay within limits. Unfortunatly that case runs about $120 but its worth it.
3.) Your overclocking your system! Overclocking is when you run your pc hihgher than recomended, usually this is done by allowing more power "voltage" to your components. Double check this in your bios and make sure your operating at specs.
Never mind posting thread states P4 lol...

I overclock the piss out of my systems...so cooling is important to me
but I don't wanna be trendy and get a watercooling system..I'm fine with my 14-20 air cooled temps

Off the top o my head:
4400 AMD
Gigabyte MOBO
2gig Corsair "the black one"
2x 7800 Nividia graphics
4 x 250 gig Western dig. sata raid 0
For cooling I use my custom peltier system. Currently opperating at 5c at max load. I'm working to get it to 0C under stress.
Unforgiven
First of all I didnt read all the posts here but I have a 9800 pro and there is a place to plug it in. That should bring it down also the fan idea would do good.

That's like a $3,500 system.. What kind of monitor, or should i say monitors with the specs of that, do you have?
