Alright, I made it to the forge and was able to buy my platemail cuirass and platemail leggings, but now need to find a good area to farm. I am lv16 and am as far as Lion's Arch. What would be the best area to farm for now? I noticed that if I am careful, I can go outside Lion's Arch solo and take down all the fire imps, and generally get decent weapon drops. Is there somewhere better though? I'd like to be able to get my platemail boots tonight if possible. I only have 1plat in the bank though, and I need materials.

lol yes there are much better places to farm than lions arch.
You probably noticed that the enemies in lions arch are easier than the ones by forge.
Those are the kinds of enemies you should be farming, but as your only at lions arch id say "get back to the forge when you hit lvl 20".

You dont need Forge armor now. That's why you cant afford it!

I did last 3 Day, around some ... Area about 200k.

I spend 50% for 15k Armor ( argh Deldrimor Steel )......
