I thought whole idea from the update was so only ascened players could get the armor and those with it?

No I just got a set of forge armor for my unascended ranger and it works just fine.

Is this a question about the armor you can get at Droknars Forge, or the forge you get to by entering the FoW and doing quests? Anyone with 10k (2-3 for the run, 7-8 for the materials/actual armor cost) can get droknars forge armor once they get to beacons perch, but with the new patch you have to be ascended to be able to get to the FoW and the expensive armor it contains.
