anyone know if there is a difference other than melee/ranged attacks? do you get a little more HP or better damage or anything for that extra 10 mana?

They get a lot more attacks in because they don't have to run around.

Secondly having both spells on the toolbar allows you to chain cast between the two summons and not have to wait.
