Should GW include actual Professions?
Nizzim
To make the game more RPG'ish?
Like you can excel as a carpenter and cut down trees to get wood for armor.
Or a miner, to get iron and steel from certain rocks.

...no. I'd think adding those sorts of professions would add odd ways of making money, and that may add to the "some people being rich" while others being poor and what not, also something like that requires a bit more...dedication than the current system and might push away casual players who'd like to keep it simple. While I wouldn't mind it as a whole, I don't think it's right for this game.
Nizzim
That whole casual player thing is bullshit.
If you cant find 15 minutes to play a game and cut down 3 trees, then you dont deserve to play the game period

PieXags
Anyone who makes a career out of cutting down 3 trees doesn't understand what a "profession" is.
Nizzim
you know what i mean, Im saying if you cant find the time to play the game long enough to do what you set out to do, then either
dont bother doing that task OR
dont play

dont play

I think more important than reasons not to implement it are reason to implement it, why the hell does GuildWars need this? It would be a load on the devs who've already got loads of work to be doing, and it wouldn't really add anything to the game...all it'd do is complicate it.
Why do we need to be carpenters when we've already got crafters for that sort of thing? Why should we be miners or anything like that?
The only place those 'professions' would fit in would be in PvE, and then it wouldn't fit in with the storyline...at all.

Stop being so negative.
It's actually quite fun when you're only equipped for a massive mining expedition and you have to avoid all the enemies, lol.
"Damn, my detector says that there's a massive silver deposit in the middle of those monsters"
Think of the fun in a party.... "Need warrior escort for mining expedition. Will share my mining haul"
I'm sure if ecto or gold could be mined...you'd all be petitioning Anet for mining to be implemented.

i don't know....mining sounds kind of like farming.......
these new classes sound fun, but i doubt they'll be implemented.

holy crap some1 is on as late as me!!
its a good idea to give people that beat the game something to do but i dont think ANet will put it in.

Bah, I still think we need a PVP arena that can only be accessed by PVE characters.

No offence, but it seems that you're asking to turn Guild Wars into something it's not. It never claimed to be a true RPG, a true MMO or anything like that. Guild Wars isn't about role playing or having a proper trade, it's about exploration, battling and character progression. Guild Wars is definately aimed at the casual market, meaning it cuts out all the crap from most MMORPGs and leaves the bits that most people enjoy...
Personally, I think most people probably couldn't be bothered to spend time chopping wood - people who do enjoy that stuff will go out and buy a true MMORPG.

I would vote for mining if I am allowed to loot the miners

I vote that we stop applying labels to GW... labels are chains and are only useful in understanding what is already in place, labels are never useful in deciding future action...
I think that being able to do stuff like this would be cool. Especially if it's not safe. Of course they'd have to think heaps about balance issues and safeguards against bots, but it's a great idea.

I think that the reason for the people saying no to this idea is because they hate WoW.
Admit it, possibly 70% of the GW players, play GW because WoW is too expensive.
Personaly i'd like to play both.
Now, this Professions thing is good. I'm not asking Anet to do it now, but to think about it in future expansions.
I dont play more than a couple hours a day because i get tired.
"Oh crap, another buch of that stupid scorpions, i'm out"
Of cours im talking of PVE, but i love the arena's battle and im looking foward to play GvG.
Now at this times when i get tired of killing scorpions, or crabs or what the hell that is, it would be nice to go mining, collect flowers, etc.
It eases the mind and its fun...
But hey, that's my opinion.

Guilds Wars is not a MMORPG so here is a idea, lets remove all MMORPG concepts OUT of the game and we up with PvP maps only ... hurray for a fantasy version of Counter Strike.

I know I don't speak for everyone but if I want to do actual roleplaying and build a persona, I'd much rather do Pen and Paper with some friends. If I'm playing a role playing computer game, I just want as much combat as possible thrown at me. That's the approach GW takes and that's why I enjoy it so much.
I like to consider Guild Wars the "Final Fantasy: Tactics" of the current crop of MMORPGS. Less Fluff, More Meat.

Or have a profession system where items made/obtained from said profession can only be used for the theoretical "character customization". You can't obtain wood planks from a tree, however, you can obtain wooden logs, so you can build yourself a house. Or even add those "theoretical guild hall" customizations to it. Need a bigger box for the Xunlai agent? Mine some ore and some wooden logs. But, you can't sell those logs or ore.
However, I think that just makes the game a little too convoluted. Not to mention the burden on the inventory screen. Oh, and atually placing "farmable" structures and areas in already existing maps. Yeah, that one won't be fun for devs, I personally say.
Ooh, even better! Make it so that "professions" are only available in Pre Searing. Because everybody's too worried about the Charr to make a house in Ascalon anyway. Then you'll have to deal with the Mantle in Kryta...then the Lich nearing the Desert. So...I say /signed if only you can do it Pre. BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHA.

No. This is another way to make noobs be good. You need to have a at least little bit of skill now to get good, if you can cut trees even a 3 year old girl could get great items..
DrSLUGFly
But the reason for that Ghost, the reason. Games are always and have been since their birth only a few decades ago purely about conflict and fighting. Games like Runescape tried to add depth but at great sacrifice to everything else.
The great "everything else" is already here, but it lacks in depth... Add more functions, options and versatility to the game and it could revolutionize the industry. So far this is merely a great segment of a larger design. Expand the possibilities and create a new design.

Only thing this game could use is the abbility to purchase some additions to your guild hall, such as a rune trader, merchant and storage so you dont have to go out runnign to different places to do it last minute before a GVG, it would all be right there. Just my 2 cents.

People keep saying this game was made fo pvp only, i want all of them to shutup and leave this thread alone. Because thats the stupiest thing ive ever heard.
They wouldnt have a PVE is this game was PVP only. Casual players? Bullcrap, Making a game thats soley based on gay skill fighting isnt a game, theres got to be something more for the people that dont enjoy that.
Mining and harvesting would gives players something to do, you could build on skills.
Like you have to chop 100 trees down to earn a chopping lvl, and each tree takes like 10 secs to cut, and you get 3 planks in the first lvl. That would be a great way to build upon the game.
And certain resources would be found only in certain locations.

i really doubt that i would bother with it, but i dont see why not, it sounds interesting.
and maxiemonster . . .why would YOU care if a 3 yr old girl had good items? if she can do it . . does that mean you suck or something?

Well, as long as it's optional, because it sounds boring as hell to me. Sorry, I'd rather battle and explore.

Maybe we should have an extra PvP area called "The Wilderness" too? :P
GW != Runescape. Besides, how would a peaceful miner or lumberjack make his way through the storyline?

The ones who are so negative towards this idea and others like it are simply the lazy ones who don't want to see the game expand for the better. They despise change, they seriously lack imagination, and simply want to get from point "a" to point "b" as fast as possible without any interruptions or detours. But you have stood your ground well against these foes! Keep coming up with good ideas...

Or possibly, we think that the developers' time would be better spent adding fun things to the game.
Nizzim
nope....
name one thing you want the devs to add that in some way doesnt mess everything else up.
This is a very simple and uplifting idea to execute and Id love to see it in game some day

and you're already SURE that this would be easy to add?
You're not the dev.
It's a great idea, but some questions arise. How would the farmers/carpenters advance in the game? What skills do they have? Are they totally separated from those six professions we have or are they integrated?
If my warrior can sometimes go out and chop some trees then that would be fun. If my carpenter can only chop trees but cannot play missions then that would not be fun. At least for me.
