Is GW like any other game?

I've found that the mention of GW on some general gaming forums leads to at least one person saying "It's just Diablo II with better graphics! If you're a real gamer play WoW (or EQII or whatever game that person is playing at the time)." Now, when asked, most these people admit they didn't play beta so I realize most of them are just fanboy/girls for whatever game they're currently playing.

The Diablo comparison has been said so many times now though I was just wondering if anyone here thinks they're alike?

Grr, all the bashers who haven't even played annoy me. Just because I didn't like WoW doesn't mean I'm not a real gamer. *sigh*

I find Guild Wars to be very close to Diablo II with WOW thrown into the combat.

I believe everybody compares it with Diablo 2 because the developers from games like Diablo 2 left Blizzard to make their own company => ArenaNet and well both games are RPGs...

The combat style is similar to Diablo 2. The game is not. Diablo 2, you had a set amount of skills available to you. Here that has been increased ten fold, and none are really "more powerful" than others.. they mesh. So your character develops with you. You also levelled in Diablo 2... you do this also, but as I'm sure you know Level 20 is the limit. The rest is finding out which character/style suits your gameplay best and most of all unlike Diablo 2. This game is completely based on teams.... there is no stand back I'll take care of them. I deem them in this order of importance. You have to have all 3 in order to be truly successful. Find some people with similar gamestyles... I'm a tactics man, I don't like running into a room full of monsters and hoping we come out on top. I like to make a strategy, and then change it when the battle starts... after all a battle strategy is always great, till the battle begins. It's those surprises, like the extra monster you didn't expect or your teammate accidentally missing a hex or targeting the wrong monster that make a game truly on the edge of your seat fun.

Your team has to correlate.
Your team has to communicate.
Your team has to cooperate.

I will say now and remember it is just my Opinion but WOW sucks compared to GW I have also played EQII and quit after 3 days. I have played WoW as well. Thank GoD I got to play them for free because I would hate to give any of my own money to either of Those games. A-Net took what was wrong with all the other online games out there and fixed it. I have D2 and I thing Guild Wars is much better. I am sick of other gamers saying GW in not good because it is free. (and this is not directed at any one person so don't flame me) They need to try it first. They would drop their P2P games in a heartbeat. Too bad the Beta is over or you could have a risk free trial but you can still play on the 27th before the games is out for only $10 if you can find a pre-order box. That way if you do not like it you do not have to get it. But I am willing to get that you will love it.

Playing in the april BWE I found Guildwars to be a multiplayer game in the spirit of a singleplayer game. By that I mean you do a mission to progress the story and you see cutscenes when you complete your goal.

When I describe it to friends, I say it has the PvM of Diablo 2 and the PvP of Unreal Tournament.

Guildwars has a Diablo-ish feel to it but it isn't the same game.
I agree with the above posts, unlike the EQ2's and SWG's of the day it has a different play and feel to it.
The "grind" is gone IMHO and I want to actually slow my leveling process to take in the game and especially the scenery.
Unlike other MMORPG's mentioned, the quests aren't for filler sake. You do quests for the most part to help out.

The warrior says "keep up if you can" you help her kill stuff and save the day.
The Necro leader takes you with her to the bowels of the dungeon.

This has not been done before and if so not near as well, I WANT to help vs doing the quest to get the magic thingamabobber...

The magic that EQ1 captured is gone to never return, MMORPG'ers wander aimlessly now from game to game to get that feeling of the first "hit" back.

Guildwars may not be this elusive drug to satisfy the need but it sure is fun to play

This sounds exactly like me! I played EQ1 for over 4 years and nothing has felt right since.

Thanks to everyone for the replies! I'm glad to hear it's not like WoW, I played it for 2 months and the quests were so repetative. I only played Diablo offline so I don't know how it was online, but I mainly liked the game because everything felt like a big event (and er.. I love items. I know, a weird thing to like about a game!)

I also think grouping/pvp will be more fun for me in this game. I love war tactic stuff, just rushing in and hitting stuff isn't fun. And I always thought grouping for quests in other games was a bit pointless, sure you got it done faster sometimes, but most of the times someone would mess up and get us all killed. I like groups for big things, and it sounds like the missions would count as big things to me.

It's Diablo 2, minus the PKs, the hackers, the grind, the overpowered items, the rather short and bland quests, the imbalanced classes, the stupid PvP, and well, pretty much anything that sucked in Diablo 2.

Also, in Diablo II, you could just start investing in a skill once you got to the appropriate level. In Guild Wars, you have to go collect all the skills you want to use from various trainers and quests. The fact that you have to collect them, the sheer variety of them, and even the way a lot of them work always reminds of Magic: the Gathering. I frequently describe Guild Wars to my friends (who enjoyed both of these other games) as the bastard love-child of Diablo II and Magic: the Gathering. Heck, even the way you assemble builds with a limited number of skills from your whole collection, looking for good comboes along the way, is a lot like making decks in MtG, and indeed a lot of the fun of this game is in that build construction phase.

Guild Wars is Guild Wars. You can't compare it to any thing as it's not like any other game. You could say it's its own genre of games. I think it's one of those games either you like it or you hate it. People are afraid of change, hence the reason call it Diablo III or say it sucks because it's free. There's also a lot of fan boys that trash the game. We all know that God hates fan boys. Ok ok so it says console fanboys, but you get the idea.

Yes, but I never competed on the ladders. Were they international and combined together?

I loved Starcraft to play vs. but never cared about ladder position. I'm pretty sure the Diablo 2 ladders are by Realm. No?

I don't know much about competitive gaming since I equally enjoy winning and losing so long as the action is good

It shares the 3D graphics with 100s of games and it shares the basic PvE instancing premise with Diablo 2, Anarchy On-Line, and WoW.

Many on-line CRPG games have competition and some do PvP fairly well including Shadowbane and DAoC along with UO.

GW is a well done game, but there isn't much unique or innovative about it.

-Streaming technology? Most people would prefer just patching once rather than disrupting their gaming time

-Selecting 8 skills from many? For PvE you could limit yourself to 8 skills in any MMORPG if you wanted to (not that you'd want to). It is in PvP that the 8 skill limit does offer some interesting choices and in this way there is some innovation.

-Level up a character in 25 hours? UO has allowed that for many years as has Diablo 2 for that matter.

-International ladder so you can be "the best in the world"? Hey if that pops your cork, that is cool and, indeed, fairly unique.

GW is a great game, but it is more evolutionary than revolutionary. The same can be said for most games, of course.
Come back after you've played the entire game, then take a look at your points. You'll be surprised to realize how untrue most of them are. Not all of them, but most of them for sure.

That response is meaningless. If you can't address my points, might as well say you simply disagree instead of implying that you have special myserious knowledge.

IMHO Guild Wars is really NOTHING like Diable 2 was. Guild Wars has a level cap of 20, which is reached within a week (if you are slow). After you reach level 20 then the real game begins. Unlike Diablo 2, Guild Wars is not level crazy must be the ultimate haxor to win muahahaha it is more Roleplaying and trying to get us pc nerds to socialize with one another.
