How does the pvp work?
Aitrus
Newb question here... haven't been paying much attention to GW stuff, until now with Blizzard's latest craptacular patch for WoW. Been lvl 60 there for like 3 months waiting the whole time for pvp, and this system is awful so screw them, time for GW I guess.
Anyways, my question is how does pvp in GW work? It doesn't sound like we just run around randomly killing each other in towns or whatnot.
Is it more like warcraft 3? Where I can grab 3 friends and do a sort of "arranged team" ladder match... and the game will tryt o find us another set of 4 people looking for a match and then load us into an arena where we do battle?
If so that would be pretty damn awesome. Esp since my main complaint about wow right now is the freaking zerging and absolute impossibility of doing 1v1 pk even with stealth.
It sounds like for PvE the towns are public, and the rest of the world is instanced (to borrow wow terms). That's cool, but then how does the pvp work out? Do I have to find opponents in game? Or is there an automated system to match me upw ith other people looking for a battle?
Thanks for any info, I'm probably gonna preorder the game today.

There are several places to PvP in Guild Wars.
-Tomb of Primeval Kings. ("Tombs" for short).
Form a party of 8 players and enter into a tiered tournament. This is the hardest and most diverse place to PvP in Guild Wars because there are different game modes for every tier. Will it be 1 on 1? Or will it be 6 teams!? Or will it be capture the relic?! The final tier of this arena is called the Hall of Heroes (HoH for short). If you can capture it, you hold it until you are defeated by another guild. Holding the Hall of Heroes opens up special content for your home world (You pick America, Europe, or whatever else when you create an acount. Can be changed 5 times).
-Guild versus Guild
Go to your guild hall, call all the players in your guild down, and form a group of 8. Then you can either select to randomly fight another team or you can challenge a Guild you specifically want to fight. When you enter the arena, you will be either the home or away team, so to speak. The only difference between the two is that the Home team plays on whatever guild hall type they selected while the away team has to play on the enemies place rather than their own. The "away" team starts on a boat but has essentially the same type of base. To win a Guild versus Guild battle, you must kill the enemy's Guild Lord who is stationed at the most protected part of their base. Capturing the flag stand by placing your team's flag on it gives you a "morale" boost every 2 minutes (opposite of a death penalty. gives +_% health and energy).
-Random Arenas
There are several arenas throughout Guild Wars that are completely random. These are the Crag, Fort Ranik, the D'Allessio Arena, the Ironhorse Arena, and the Ascalon Arena. In these, you just show up at the outpost and click "enter mission" and when the countdown clock stops, you are placed in the arena with 5 random people against a random team of 6.
Guild Wars is "instanced", which means that when you are in a mission or PvP or an explorable area (anything except for towns and outposts), then you only see your party, possibly your enemies (for PvP), and you get your own copy of the world. This irradicates the problem of spawn campters, farming parties that get in your way, and even better, it allows you to do whatever the hell you want in the story. It makes it so the developers can make a town burn down as soon as you finish a quest without everyone else behind you going "hey! why did this town burn down!?".
It's a great game. And you will find it much better than World of Warcraft who, surprisingly, still has many fans throughout all of it's blunderings.

Sounds pretty interesting.
So for guild combat though it is only 8 vs 8?
And say me and a friend want to 2v2, there is no way for us to battle against 2 other people?

I also have a question, are all the matches you play count against you?...Like is there a practice arena that you can test out your team build without it counting for a win or a loss?
Ruphin
so you can only pvp in certain areas?
Or can you just fight anywhere?
I personally really like the fact... Fights can bust out anywhere in other mmorpgs... (I been playing L2 mostly)

only in pvp areas which means no random pkers or any of that fun
Weezer_Blue
You can only fight each other in specific arenas.
The only thing that counts against you is Guild versus Guild, and I have been told that there is a way to select to fight an unranked Guild vs Guild battle in which the outcome has no effect. In the other arenas, it's just for fun. (Well... the Tombs isn't *just* for fun... But it won't bring down your rank in anything)

Boo.... Sounds like this game might not be for me...
Lvl cap of 20? reachable in 2 weeks?
pvp in limited areas...
I dunno sounds carebearish?
Is there any rewards / losses from pvping? or just pride?
Can people just come and harass you outside a pvp area and you can't do nothing about it?
I can only find info on humans? is that the only race?

Ok cool, thanks for the reply

PvP is limited to the PvP arenas that Weezer_Blue mentioned.
The PVE content is all instanced.
There are no 2v2 arenas in the game as of now. That could change in the future.
Guild Battles and Tombs allow you to customize your team, and that is where the most competetive PvP takes place.
The random arenas pair you up with 3, 5, or 7 other people for a match against another team that has been randomly formed.
The Guild vs Guild battles are the only ones that are "ranked". Your wins and losses in the other Arenas (even Tombs) do not go on any kind of record. In GvG you have the option to challenge another guild in an unranked match, if you don't want to risk your ranking, or if you just want to get some practice.

The rewards for PvPing are Fame which translates into Rank (rewards you with a symbol of rank), Getting your Guild Higher on the ladder, and fun. No one goes into a Counter Strike server going "hey! I killed you! Now where is my reward?"
2 weeks?! oh lord no! You can reach the level cap in much less than that if you play as a "hardcore" gamer! I could get to it in a couple days (probably 3 or 4). For all questions revolving around the level cap, look at the sticky in this forum area.
The only race is humans (currently). Expansion packs will release new races and classes.
People will not harrass you outside of PvP arenas. What could you do about it other games? hey! you're talking shit about me! I'm going to get my 400 friends to come down here and teach you a lesson and take all your stuff!

Guild wars is not for everyone, as much as I think it is going to be the best game out, not everyone agrees.
