Slashdot has a high number of Wow players, should be an interesting read.

Interesting to be sure. Always nice to step outside the echo chamber of GW fan land. I liked this comment:

Obviously from someone who has never seen a female Elementalist...

you do not want to be slashdot'd. It brings a server to it's knees.

that was several years ago. being /.'d isn't as big a deal now as it was. if ur website bandwidth is tiny then it'll still be matter, but for the most part the internet is just a bigger place now.

The Joint :p

Looks like the reviews are pretty postitive. Some people seemed like on the downer trail and then sort of do a 180. Pretty cool.

Am I not up to date? Because I never heard of Slashdot or what happens when you get slashdotted... Is it supposed to be some sort of mega game site? Because to me IGN is the only game site I go to for info...

No, it is a popular site for nerds (like me)

Just a lot a LOT of clicks so if you get your site linked you'll get swamped with traffic for a few days usually.

Most of the posts seem pretty balanced and the one offensive "fanboy" post was clearly labeled as such

Slashdot is one of the largest user communities on the internet. It has ~750K registered users, and probably 5 times that in lurkers (like me!). Despite what wongba says, I am not convinced this site could handle a direct slashdot (from the main page, *not* their games page like this story) even on the new server. A few million clicks over the course of a few hours will put the hurt on you.

Anyway its a great site for general technology, science, and general nerdy news with a heavy linux/open source slant. Its my favorite site and I spend way too much time there when I'm at work.

Hmm, I think GameFAQs has nearly as many members, if not more!

True, but even now slashdot lives up to that still. Considering their numbers still grow. Being slashdotted is either like having a DoS attack on your server, except that these pings and packets are legitimate. Or there's so many people viewing the content, no matter how small the site actually is, there isn't many servers that can handle the load out there.

This place put on /. would be damn good for it's rep, but the first few days, you wouldn't bother coming here as it'd get hammered.

Wasn't that long ago that they brought NASA's JPL to its knees (announcing a new release of World Wind, which is apparently hosted on JPL's servers).

No, I agree, the game IS modest... and it's a good thing.

No pure pra and bikini action, which promotes a very healthy attitude for my female counterparts. It's about time a game rewards female gamers for their skills and not their ubErz h0tTzneSs (and yes, I AM aware that 90% of them are really guys anyways...)

Wait a second, did I just admit that I checked what kind of underwear they wear

That may be the case (and I don't care to verify), but Gamefaqs isn't the type of site most people read every day for their news. There are other sites capable of unleashing a slashdot-esque episode of server smashing (Hardocp and Penny Arcade -- two other sites I frequent as an example -- often do the same), but not 15-20 times a day. I would say close to 40% or so of the sites that get directly linked from the main page don't make it very long. Again, I think it would be beneficial if we could avoid an even secondary (off the main page) /.'ing.

As an aside, who actually is paying the bandwidth and hosting bills for this site? It obviously isn't ad supported like some other GW fansites *coughgwonlinecough*.
