I was wondering scince I am starting a ranger I am looking for the best pet pre-searing. I think at one point I found somthing on the web talking about how you can actually tame a black bear ususually found in riverside (I think). Anyways if anyone has any information or links to this so I could find out how to do it would be appreciated. Thanks!

It'd be awesome if you could tame that River Drake out by Regent Valley.

It's possible to tame a bear, though the problem is that it interrupts you a lot when you are trying to tame it, so you need a knockdown or something.

Hiya!

You can tame a pre-searing bear,
but it takes a lot of patience, timing, and the right set of skills.
It requires studying the bear's attack pattern
and then strategizing accordingly.

Post-searing, you'll receive a quest that requires you
to tame another Melandru's Stalker.
If you want to complete that quest,
you'd need to get rid of the bear you worked so hard for.

Around the time that you ascend,
you'll see more black bears in the Shiverpeaks.
I have heard that those bears do not break the tamer's charm.
I'd recommend trying out the other critters along the way
and waiting until post-searing to acquire your Ursa Major.

You can't tame the pre-searing bears anymore. You used to be able to do so with a certain build and with help. However, the devs fixed it so that you can't tame them anymore.

The pets you can tame pre-searing are:

Striders (birds) - all over the place
Warthog - just outside Ascalon City & in the Northlands
Wolf - Ascalon fields (outside the abbey)
Melandru's Stalker - Regeants Valley by the shrine/statue of Melandru (you need to tame one of these for the ranger quest..)

I believe thats all the pets ytou can get pre-searing..

Post-Searing you can also get:

Dune Lizard (Fern Lizard?)
Black Bear (Lorner's Pass iirc)
Warthogs (Maguuma jungle region)
Lynx (Krytan region)
Snow Wolf (Shiverpeaks)
Melandru's Stalker
Moa Bird (bloody chickens! )

Hmm.. think thats all..

Edit - If your unhappy with a pet, you need to talk to the guy just ouside of Ascalon. He's got a title of tamer or something like that (sorry, can't remember the name right now). He's the same guy who was standing close to Master Ranger Nemtre (sp?) in Regent's Valley pre-searing. Talk to him and he will take the pet off your hands, but once you do this your pet will be gone forever.

Once upon a time..

There's a spider. And no, I don't mean the moss spider in pre-searing. Where? I'll leave it for you to find out.

I have a question about levels here. I have a ranger who tamed the stalker from the start, and the pet is now level 15. It would be nice to try a different pet for a while, but if I get rid of my stalker, then get rid of the new pet and tame a new stalker, what level will it be at?

If I'm remembering right you can see it's level before you try and tame it. When you click on the creature you want to tame it's health and level will be on the top of your scree just like any other NPC etc in the game you can click on.

What the level will actually be depends on the area you're finding it in, I'm guessing a good way to get a general idea of what you might find in an area is to look at the levels of the henchies in the nearest outpost, but that wont be exact.

I think all pets start out at lvl 5 no matter what location it's found at, at least thats the highest lvl I've seen for charmable stuff.

All normal pets do yes... but the Black Widow Spiders in the Underworld start at level 20. But you need to complete a lot of hard quests first.

And you cannot get the bear in pre-searing anymore, but you can still get bears later in the game.

The warthog in pre-searing by the bull is only lvl 2.

Outside of Ascalon city there's a tamer in post-searing.

Hiya!

I wouldn't worry about what level your pet is.
They level very quickly, no matter what they start out as.

You should try out each one to see which one you like.
I thought that I'd like the warthog very much,
but it was kind of boring compared to the others.
(Two of my other characters have pets.)

Yeah,
I think that it would be fun to be able to tame a critter
that seems benign & docile, like the bunny up on a hill in pre-searing.
Only, in battle, it would inflate to 20 times its size,
get really angry & ferocious, grow pointy teeth & claws (or talons),
and salivate and breathe heavily on your foes.
When the battle would end, the bunny (or other critter)
would shrink back to its teeny size.

Those frogs that appear in post-searing also have excellent potential!
They could inflate to 20 times their size
and spit mucous on your foes, slowing them down,
or they could whack your foes with its tongue. . .
or if it were a toad, it could poison them with its touch,
or give them warts.

Heh, heh!

I had a bear, with my Ranger for the longest time, but I never used any Beast Master skills, so my pet never leveled.

So to make things easier, I dropped the bear and captured the "Black Widow" in the Underworld. It only apprears after the "Wrathful Spirits" quest.

Most pets are level 5 when you first capture them and you have to have them fight with you so they can gain XP. Unlike any pet in the game, the "Black Widow" is already lvl 20 when you capture it.

Even though I have the Black Widow for a pet, I rarely use her. It is mainly for prestige purposes.
