Ok dunno if anyway has tried this before, and i couldn't find anything specifically relating to this train of thought.

Some of you guys on here seem like pretty decent folks. I have read numerous posts stating "sure i give stuff away its really hard" and "so i ran this guy for nothing" and all sorts (shame i never meet anyone like that IG).

Anyways, last night i am playing along, with my lvl 19 W/Ne. Ok so GW is my first MMORG, but i have played baldurs gate, and D&D so i know about strategy, and team playing, and i am a decent enough guy to take advice from friends and forums, about party etticate, and all kinds of stuff.

Last night, i was somewhere up past the wilds, doing one of the missions ( i havent really done many as i enjoy exploring and hunting, and generally helping people lower then me in lvl do previous missions..hey its a good way to make new aquitances) and someone (whom has decided he'll be the leader) shouts (and i was a shout not the use of the skill) "CHARGE" and runs into perhaps the largest army of white mantle i have ever seen. So here we are, a lvl 17 W/Mo charging in, and suddenly everything kicks off. I think ok right, lets go, so while the Necro is raising the dead the ele suddenly runs off i notice infact i am the only one still fighting...None of the white mantle have died and i am standing like a chump fighting them single handed.

Needless to say i died. then amazing i started getting slatted!! "NOOB!! you got PWNED" all of them really just layed in to which i made some fleeting comment about having to go out and experience real life.

Did i really do something wrong? was i meant to beat them all alone or something?

I hate lete speak (as i am told its called) its so patronising to know that some spotty little 14 yr old is judging you based on a pixelated character in an online game...but anyways....

What i would like to know is, do any of you sages out there have any advice, tips or whatever to help out people new to MMORGS.

Loads of posts are dedicated to "new to GW" but they are all followed by "i have played WOW" Some people i have teamed with use these very forums but are scared to say they are basically new to pc gamming incase they get called a "NOOB".

anyways sorry if this goes into the wrong place, and thanks for any help in advance...

I think you are referring to Riverside Province mission, which is a mission to play stealthy normally. So the war that butted in shouting charge should be castrated. I do however have a problem wrapping my mind on this one:
Quote:
so while the Necro is raising the dead the ele suddenly runs off i notice infact i am the only one still fighting...None of the white mantle have died and i am standing like a chump fighting them single handed.
how does the nec raise dead when there are no bodies?
ok, that was a little of topic.

it is called 'leet speak' or '1337 speak'. the leet part refers to the word 'elite', meaning they consider themselves to be highly skilled. However, many times they are simply not. The using numbers instead of letters is just a way to distinguish themselves.
It seems you found a bad PUG. it happens, the only advise i can give you is become a party leader. By being a partyleader, you can talk a bit with them BEFORE mission, and see what they are like.
And do watch the radar indeed. If your teammates start running, i'd suggest you'd also run. Or like you did: be the brave man that distracted the enemy. Unfortunately you did not get the merits from your teammates obviously.

I don't quite understand the story there seems to be a gap in the story. Did everyone start fighting and then decide it was a lost fight and ran off, leaving you there before you realized they had left?

Advice? Just ignore them. You died, it's not the end of the world.

It's always a W/Mo!

Anyways, ignore anyone who says any variation of "noob". They are generally unintelligent and not worth even looking at let alone responding to. You were not the one to "CHARGE".

lemming syndrome again. One thinks he knows it all and drags the team into death.

Some are, sometimes, aware enough of the situation and decide to retreat which is yet another mistake, because by drawing the attention of the mobs to the whole team, often enough, get's everybody killed.

I was on a similiar quest/mission as a mesmer a few weeks ago.
Some warrior decided it was a smart thing to rush into 8-12 hellhounds all by himself.

While I tried to stay away from certain death I got flamed for not joining a fight that couldn't have been won.

"If one of the team members is in trouble, it's our duty to help him".

"Honorable", I replied, "but why help some suicidal warrior when you know that you can't win?"

I received more flames and left the team.

If you see your team running: join them.

With growing experience you'll know when it's time to run/retreat/fall back.

The concept behind calling people newb or noob or n00b or whatever, to me, seems to be the same concept that those who see themselves as part of a "superior race" had more than 60 years ago and still have.

I'm not saying they're racists, but the concept: feeling superior and feeling the need to rub it into other peoples faces, feeling pitty for those who are not as good as they think they are; it's just the same, and it's BAD.

As in real life those "superior people" use a given anonymity to fling accusations and foul language at anybody they regard as not superior or one of their own kind.

Thanks for the advice and moral support guys.... I'd also like to fill in a few blanks...
I wasnt the first in but i was the last one out. I am a necro so i have limited healing capabillities so managed to kill a few, maybe 3 or 4...before i bite the bullet.

My arguement was simple. You got into a fight, you thought you could win, you realised you couldnt, and the rest of the team followed. No-one actually called retreat. So maybe next time you should consider your leadership skills before choosing to lead a party.

But thanks again guys.

Noob or Newbie started out in the military many years ago. It wasn't meant to bring anyone down, it's just a short term for 'new person' or something to that effect. We always used it on the new people, kind of like an initiation thing. After a month or so, it would be the next new persons turn.
You can't say that everyone that uses noob is an asshat, depends on when and how they say it.
Sorry to get a little off topic here, just didn't like what someone said.

I called my cousin a newb b/c he was new to the game, I always say that about people that are new, but when people start flaming me I leave the group cold turkey, let them attempt the mission b/c usually the people that flame are the ones that arent that great and blame others for their idiocy

Sometimes groups of people get together just to punk/mess with others. If you feel you're mature enough in the community then you shouldn't be offended by stupid people (You might need to get used to it). The community has gotten worse than before and as much as we all hate it, we can't exactly stop it. As for Noob and Newbie... Newbie isn't anything I would find offensive if it was stated correctly, it means exactly what deathbound said and thats a new person, there's nothing wrong with newcomers. However, noob is just a an alternate word for idiot or some other kind of suppose to be "Offensive language". Games are supposed to be fun, don't ponder about what other people think of you unless it effects your gaming experience alot. If they're the problem, just ignore them and laugh, if you're the problem, you'll need to start reconsider your ettiqiuete. (I have crappy spelling)

This is starting to get to be a common problem. Now that these people that supposedly FINISHED the game (Not possible since the game is not finished yet) are bored. They are now acting like bullies in game to anyone they feel is lesser then themselves. Or Worse they intentionally sabotage missions and ruin things for other players.

Another common thing is having lazy players. people insisting on being pulled to the cut-scene instead of fighting and PLAYING the game. hell I was with a group yesterday that had half the team dancing back at the beginning while the rest of us were trying to play the game. and when we needed rezed they would not do it. I was a healer and was trying to protect the group as we went but it was not easy with the team split up in 3 directions. And another guy running to the cut-scene not able to make it and crying for help, telling us not to fight to just run. I got farther on my own then with these people. that is why PvE anymore is largely becoming a Single-player mode with henchmen. incompetent or sabotage players.

The mission was Iron Mines of Moladune, and I joined a party that said they were after mission. NOT an infusion run (which I Hate with a passion but thats another issue) 1hr later they did not even make it to the seeker... but I would NOT disconnect. I refused to be one of those people. they left me dead (monk)and all died except the idiot dancing (warrior). After back I left party. warned the public of the actions of that group and went in with henchmen. 40mins later the mission was done and I was infused as well and had the bonus too boot. all with henchmen. Not only that but I had 3 gold drops, and 3 purple drops. I also unlocked Warrior Superior Absorption on a gold Armor drop from the Mursaat Inquisitor part of the mission (bonus). By the end I had a +10% HB where as in the previous mission with regular players we had at least a -20% DP. Conclusion. unless you are looking to waste your time, dont bother with parties of people you do not know. Cause 9 chances out of 10 they will screw you till your butt is raw.

I hear ya on that Moladune mission, experienced a drop of most the group right after infuse took place but the remaining 3 of us completed it anyway. Now with the mission, riverside providance... yeah, lots of tough lv18 white mantel who make it hard for spell casters to hit them as they run around and around all over the place. As an E/Mo I have had to back out of a fight to recharge just so I can actually be useful again. An E/Mo is no use to the group when she's outta energy and being beat down. But I don't leave groups behind as well unless I know I can't help them, I'll back away, then use rebirth from afar and we carry on. Was down to me in a trip to ToA and I had to run half the map to lose the enemy before being able to go back and rebirth the crew. But hey, sometimes the best way to win... is run heh.

This isn't quite accurate. In the military, it's "NFG" or "New Friggin Guy" (substitute friggin with your own carnal verb of choice). Noob (or newb, or newbie) started with early FPS deathmatch games, like Doom or Quake.

Same concept, different roots.

Rise up and overcome the patronising 14 year olds shouting in leet speak. I don't mean to sound rude but I try to let them be as they are because I think it is important that everyone realize that some of these kids that we deem immature are indeed immature. They are children and I would guess it to be fair that we let them live their childhood and mature. All i'm trying to say is that they will grow out of it. All you have to do is walk away. If you really feel a need for a parting blow, then glare at your monitor.

Hi there,

I've found a really great thread that's all about people looking for other reliable people to group up with.

http://guildwarsguru.com/forum/showt...1&page=1&pp=25

If you're sick of lame PUGs with Rude people, try PMing anyone on this list. I've partied with some of them, and it's been a fantastic experience every time.

Generally i just ignore them. I dont need to assert myself simply because i adopt the attitude, "people that matter dont mind....people that mind dont matter"

But again thanks for the tips, oh and Mimi thanks, nice to know where it came from.

PUG is the equivalent of Pick Up Bar. One-Fight-Stand is best avoid for health related issues

ps.: on the reverse side, you now know how PUG are. Just shrug off the trash talk and join another group, until you found some good ones. BTW, put them into friendly list (or note down their names) so if they behave good, you know how to find them next time.

I think you did the right thing and hope you can just ignore the disrespect.

One thing I noticed is just the charge being called at all. If you're facing a large group of enemy you almost always want to split them up into bite sized chunks.

I don't want to say the majority of warriors, but it seems like the majority don't know how to do this. Rangers, who should know how are often lacking as well.

To split a large group what you need is to have everyone except the single puller far back. The puller attacks the nearest enemy and tries to keep them within their aggro bubble on the radar. They move back toward the group until most of the big group turns around and goes back to their resting position.

You can't whittle it down to a single enemy the way you could in EQ but almost always you can get it down to a single linked group. A linked group is all tied together. Many people think because the whole mass moves they're all linked but that's not true. I've never seen a larger linking than 6 enemy.

If you knew this already I apologize. I wasn't trying to sound like a know it all.

Perhaps the majority of warriors didn't even have a secondary set of weapons that allow them to pull. I pack a bow eventhough I have no skill/attributes in bows.

You mean "newb" don't you? newb means someone new to something while n00b or noob means someone new to something but refuses all help because they think they are "t let pnzr!" ..They die they blame their team because "OMG IM LET PNZR I CNT DE!!! U *insert uber cuss here*" Unforntantly..Most people forgot newb even exists, so now everyone uses n00b, whenever I see someone calling somebody else a n00b I laugh at them *unless they called that person a n00b for a reason, then I dont laugh*
