Can someone help me with this staff?

I picked up this staff ,Insightful Earth Staff of Death Magic. Since I don't do Death Magic, I upgraded it with a staff wrapping of Shelter, so now it's called an Insightful Earth Staff of Shelter...just what I wanted.
But there are 2 Energy modifiers on the staff, one in white that says +8, the other in Gold that says +3. When I put the staff in my hand I'm only getting a +3 bonus on my energy and not the +8. I do meet the requirements of 6 Earth magic, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Here's a shot of the stats:

What were you using before? You probably had an energy modifier on whatever that was. Try removing all weapons and items from your hands, then re-equipping that staff. You should see the energy +11 difference then.

The Earth req only applies to the damage, not to the energy, I believe (but could be wrong).

OK, you were right, I had a flame artifact in my offhand that was messing me up...I took it off and it was up by 11. Thank you, Sofonisba!

a) you are forgetting that your previous weapon added energy as well(might have been 8 so you will only see a 3 energy difference between this staff and your last weapon)

b) you are expecting your off-hand item to be giving you +energy as well. Staves are two handed. Your off-hand item is disregarded.

I would salvage it, since you can get max dmg/enrgy staff and put mod on that.
