I just got barbed trap for my R/N at level 18 and am trying to figure out how to use it effectively.
I have tried luring the mobs into it, but it doesn't seem to make much difference when they get there. Do you wait until the mobs get there and then lay the trap or do you set it first? I have tried both ways and it doesn't seem to be very effective either way. I've heard that it's a great damage dealer, but I'm obviously doing something wrong.
Appreciate any replies.

partner up with other trappers ... lay down a few sets in one spot ... and lure the mobs in ... watch the explosion and have a nice day!

It helps to have lay more than one trap, for example, lay down your Barbed Trap, then a Flame Trap, then a Dust Trap. Don't just lay the three down though, lay multiples of each one. It takes a while, but to watch so many monsters go up in flames, start bleeding and get blinded, is just funny to see.
I got Flame Trap and Dust Trap from Droknars, I'm not sure what quest you can get them from and when, but until you get those two, just remember multiples of traps laid in the wrong spot can be better than one trap laid in the right spot.

Trapping also helps in GvG's. Mainly protecting the flag area or the side gate of your own guildhall. Rangers are usually designated flag runners in GvG. Since you will be using a speed increaser from the wilderness survival line, using traps is a good idea. A good trapper can completely disrupt the flow of battle if he lays down traps in smart places. If you control the flag, are not being ganked and have a bit of time, you can lay traps around your casters to protect them from mean old warriors.

Well I'm not an expert at setting traps but I experimented with them a bit. I personally wouldn't bother too much with traps until you get more of them. If you set traps solo your skillbar might look like that :
the traps :
dust trap
spike trap *elite*
barbed trap
flame trap
defense :
whirling defense
storm chaser
throw dirt
attributes:
wilderness survival 12+4 (superior rune + mask)
expertise 12+1
strategy :
Set all 4 traps in 1 spot, maybe spike or barbed trap a bit ahead of the other ones so as much mobs as possible run into the other traps at the same time.
Wait until your energy is full and your traps are recharged.
Shoot the mobs with your bow and lure them into the traps.
Throw on whirling defense and set more traps, use throw dirt when blindness from dust trap wears off.
Use storm chaser if something goes terribly wrong
edit:
You can try to stop at the location with the traps when luring the mobs. This will increase the number of mobs that will be affected by the traps greatly, but it's also very risky
