GW is missing... Long term goals.

I'm not here saying the game is bad. I like it. It's fun. But there is a void that needs to be filled. For some background, I've played a mess of games, and the ones that kept me entranced the longest had seemingly unreachable goals. In DAoC for me it was a maxxed crafter in every craft. In Diablo II singleplayer there were two... every item in an ATMA stash, and a set of seven hardcore characters finishing the game, one from each class.

This game lacks a windmill for me to tilt at. No holy grail to find.

If you could point out one, I'd be most appritiative.

I've come up with:
1) Unlock every skill. This doesn't do it for me. Unlocking a skill is a determined outcome. You go to this point in the game, and get the skill you are after.

2) Explore every corner of every map with a primary of each class. This one has problems too, with the number of slots available, and with the lack of purpose to it.

There doesn't have to be a huge tangable reward for completion of the task, it just has to be a worthy goal. Let me know if you have come up with anything epic to strive for.

I agree completely.

But, this is what all the complainers keep complaining about. This is the 'grinding' part that none of them wants.

'They' want to be able to do whatever 'they' want. So if you have a goal to strive for, that you can't get to almost instantly, 'they' will no-doubt mass spam every forum to get it removed, or be handed to them on a silver platter..

Oh, I don't want the grind. See... a grind is something you HAVE to do in order to compeat. They've done an excellent job minimizing that. You can really become competative quite quickly if you are a quick learner, who knows how to work with his team.

I want an optional goal. Not one for the mainstream. Not one that destroys the balance, so that everyone would want to do it. The reward would be doing it, not having done it. Perhaps future chapters might give us something.

Again though, I ask... is anyone on a bizarre quest of their own?

for me it is simple

i will play as long and when and if i have

the time
something else more important doesnt need attention (cat for instance)
and am having fun

if not i will put it aside foe a bit until the urge strikes again or something new comes out or chapter 2 comes out...........you get the idea

this is not an alternate life place to live in but the neighborhood playground which i visit but never expect to pitch a tent and try to live here as if leaving is life or death.

note i am having a great time playing it as it evolves and i will take it warts and all and thank them for the fun

if the servers go down tomorrow i would be disappointed but still feel i got more than my moneys worth already.

i said that a month ago and i have had a month of gravy so to speak already with half the game to go

if liking the game warts and all is a fanboi add me to that list

.....aaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnddddddddddddddd the answer to your question is........

BOOM!

The Fissure armour.

there is absolutley NO way that getting the FoW for just ONE character can be done in what could be construed as a "small" amount of time. let alone getting it on 4 characters. it takes approximatley 1 million GP to get a set of FoW armour, then theres actually GETTING to the crafter, which may not seem like a big deal for most, but i live in europe. and you know why thats a problem.

Yep... that's a goodie. Now, the current problems the game is having with it's economy stem from the fact that this seems to be the only long term goal. People are making monks with supior runes to solo the underworld. The price of stuff is going through the roof. The economy is in turmoil.

I was hoping for something that was a bit more obscure than collecting the armors. But it's a good point. Thanks for bringing it here.

well Guildwars does have a long term goal. Guild battles. thats pretty much the long term goal for every person in this game, level up, get strong, UAS, and then go GvG. after all the title is guild wars.

Um Long term goal? --> Fissure of Woe armor x4 characters

Not That I WILL ever do this. Most of the Fissure armor is crappy in comparison to their 15k counterparts.

For me, the long term goal is in PvP. It is great to see how we are getting better and better every day when we train in Tombs. So my first goal is winning in HoH with guild mates and then become competitive and active in Guild ladder.
This is why I cant stop admiring Guild Wars, it is about skills and training.

Get fissure armor for all 4 characters. Then get fissure armor for all your guildmates. Then get fissure armor for me. Then get fissure armor for all players on your server. Then get fissure armor for everyone in the world.

There, long term goals :P

This games lacks nothing, its a game and it does what all games do... gets boring and over played.. i use to play like 15 hours a day, but now ive cut down to like 3-4 hours at most, i play less so i don't get bored as fast... the point is that there is probly no way Anet can make this game "never get boring" because eventualy a new game will arive and people will flock like sheep to that game much like they did to this one...

I have to agree with the OP, there is a lack of a goal after ring of fire missions.
More quests, more repeatable easily accessable quests would go along way to bringing back a fun factor.
FoW and Underworld, simply don't do it for me, neither does getting the armour from FoW. It looks pretty and erm thats it, the 75k armour in a full set is enough for me.
FoW and Underworld are actually no better than a fair few of the harder PvE areas, the only diff is it costs 1 plat, and the death pen if party dies is area over. The areas don't actually offer anything new interms of gameplay innovation, just frustration and expense if you are in a poor PuG.
HoH does have some varied gameplay, is fun and doesn't cost 1 plat, But getting a good team is not that easy if you rely on PuG.
This is about as appealling to me as running lonars from becons perch with henchies at -60%.

The game is fairly good, but best played in small doses after completion. A.net would like you to play constantly, but unless you are a PvP fan in a PvP orientated guild, Guild Wars does not cut it.

Perhaps if in the expansion they expand the Guild Halls into domains that can be attacked, won and lost, with owning a guild hall like owning land and you receive tax / gold from the areas surrounding it would be more interesting. Then if you beat a guild you would gain their guild hall and increase your gold gain. The gold could be used to purchase stuff, more npc guards for your guild halls, guards for your areas surrounding the guilds. Even have the guild halls only accessable to attack if you have travelled there via a PvE instance.

This has been done with other mmorpg's, but could be done alot better with the GW PvP system.

I think the 4v4 arena really lack goals.

It is just killing and being killed - without a purpose.
Yes faction will help but for me it appears to be a number rather than some real-achievment.

This topic of discussion is a real dilema for me. On 1 hand its good to have a hard (not impossible) goal to aim for. This will keep me interested for longer periods of gameplay. However, I do not have the time to grind for those goals. So I think the best solution is to set up goals that give items/rewards that do not give technical advantage of grinders over casual players. The 60k armor is one of the good example done by Anet. Perhaps more interesting rewards can be set up further. Then casual players can slowly work towards these goals without the worries of losing advantage to other more dedicated players.

even if some of the long range goals create a little more grind....those less hardcore need not even think about completing those goals.

I'm going to take a guess by saying that the reason fissure armor is not that sought after is because it adds nothing but a slightly different look to your character. If it were in some way better, people would be more motivated to get it, however, then we would not all be on equal playing field, bringing up the more time=better character arguement.

I've got a few ideas for this.

Currently, we have a high-echelon of super cool weapons that everyone wants - Firey Dragon Swords, Fellblades, Crystalines, Chaos Axes (allthough there are MANY out there), Storm Bows.

This is good, as a Storm Bow doesn't have any bonuses over bows you can pick up for free in PVP. The trouble is, people don't usually find these, they buy them - which is hurting both the economy and the coolness of the weapons.

A new class of special weapons to go along with a special quest would be great, an easily recognizeable blade/bow/wand/whatever that you can only get by completing this quest. The twist? Two twists, actually: 1) The weapon is customized for your character when you get it - you can't trade it away, so the only way to recieve this weapon is to complete the quest.
2) You must complete all missions and bonuses to be able to activate the quest - you can't skip around the game to get there.

The quest needs some new gameplay elements, such as a mission with mixed PVP and PVE areas, such as you round a corner and are shifted to an instance PVP zone against another player team - something new and different. But overall this should give some players something to push toward that is a goal, an achivent others can see and go OMG WOW, and a new way of playing that isnt pure grind, such as the fissure/UW armors.

I'm sure some of the armor sets were considered somewhat long term goals...until someone figured out how to get it earlier. But you gotta have it to go through the gmae faster.../wink

Long terms goals are nice, but can mostly be personal things. It would be kind of cool if some of the things mentioned had some kind of recognition in game, though.

For instance, if you got an Explorer's (Scout's?) medal when you had revealed the entire shroud from an area... there are a lot of areas, getting them all would be kind of cool.

Great idea. This game needs a new strategic element to be fun in the long term. Right now, GW emphasizes mostly team tactics and is very balanced on that aspect. IMHO a game needs both good strategy and tactic elements to stay fun in the long run. That is why so many people want a large scale war between three nations in the GW's game world.

As long as it doesn't effect the level playing field of competition, or is just kept out of competition, we seriously don't give a shit. I don't care if you can get a 150-220 Eternal Sword with +500% damage while health > 0% as long as I never have to fight someone who has such a sword in PvP.

Infact, as long as they're kept out of PvP, I fully support these kinds of long term goals, because, currently, the only thing that PvEers have to look forward to is an unfair advantage in PvP. The more you take that burden off the competitive playing field, and put it into the PvE area, the happier PvP players will be.
