I've been playing for MMO for awhile now, recently just wrapped up playing WoW since inital launch and decided to switch over to GW. I have not had the chance to participate in the beta thus never got a chance to get a feel for what GW is like. I've been doing some heavy digging on the forums trying to find out some info on a good build I should go for. So far I have to say, this game seem balanced enough that there is no general consensus on what is the favorite class combination to be. I played a Shaman in WoW, and if anyone played WoW you know that a Shaman was considered very unlikely to beat in 1v1 pvp.
What I want to know is, what do you think would be a very good build combination to be both effective in PVE and Group PVP. From my experiences in MMO, 1v1 PVP is trivial, I'm more interested in PVE and Group PVP or I guess in this case GvG. From what I've seen it seems like the Ranger and Warrior are the most played and possibly the favored? Elementalist look good too since I do enjoy playing heavy dmg dealing classes.
To be honest I really wanted to play Necro, but from what i've read Necro doesn't seem to be favored around here, or at least not as a primary. I guess what I'm asking is what would be a good class combination that will prove to be superior in PVE and GvG?

As you have mentioned yourself, GW is a team-based game, so a good TEAM BUILD is essential rather than individual's build. You should experiment with the game and decide on your own play style. Since character grind is pretty non-existant in GW, you can play and test with many different classes/builds.
As to your PvE/GvG question....the skill sets for PvE can be very different from PvP. For example, fire AoE are pretty useless in PvP because people can simply move out of the way. Minions and pets are good to use in PvE but useless in PvP too. Disruption skills, on the other hand, are oriented towards PvP and not PvE.
Therefore you'd always need a wide skill set if you want your character to excel in both PvP and PvE.
I can't really think of a class combo in GW that is parallel to the Shaman in WoW. But perhaps W/Me or W/Mo would be the ones you'd look at.

Thx for the reply, after much thinking, I realize I am still more of a single target heavy dmg dealer kind of person. Although I care about PVE, I don't think I will choose a AoE kind of build. I much prefer a strong build that's good at getting rid of a single target fast at a time. Even in GvG the best way is to take out ur targets individually 1 by 1, starting from the one class that proves to be the most dangerous. So in a sense I'm still more of the superior 1v1 build. In this sense I mean good at teaming in PVE and doing heavy dmg and able to stay alive 1v1 in PvP. Any suggestions for this kind of build?
Is the ranger a good primary? It seems like most of the time range attackers suck in MMO, I know it's the case in WoW especially. Hunters simply sucked bad. But from what I see, Rangers seem to be favorite in GW? Could the R/E Shock Sniper be the possible candidate for this superior 1v1 high dmg single target build? Please give me your thoughts.
