I salvage everything with expert.
I've got hundreds of steel from salvaging swords, axes, sheilds and hammers
I've got many leather squares (don't remember what I salvaged them from) but be careful, you can salvage a leather square for the other leather one
I've got 3 charcoals, 1 from drop I think and the other 2 salvage

i got an ecto from a ghostlyremains when i first started post searing. there is a bonus where you have to kill an army of eternal like soldiers by the cemetary. it was out one of the main quests outside of ascalon. i think it was Ruins of Surmia. anyway, i sold it to the trader because i thought it was nothing special. now i got my FoW armor so it doesnt really matter to me.

Net War is right I also did the same thing and got a ecto when I first started playing. Like him I also sold it but to the rare material merchant. I think back then I got like 1 or 2 platinum. How often you can get ecto from the salvaging is another matter but if you don't want to shell out the money its the only way to go.

Maybe you should better read all the posts in this thread...?!
Someone posted earlier that it could be that ecto can only be salvaged with the normal kit. And noone ever posted that he did get an ecto using the expert! And I've heard that before, so it's a reasonable question.
But I should have asked - did you ALWAYS use the expert...?
Manfe posted shortly after Xue Yi Liang and didnt write "expert(ly)". Possible that he did try to salvage with the normal one.
BTW what means "FFS" and "OFC"?
