Skills - Dryder's Defenses

At one point, I attempted to use this skill to reduce the damage from the meteor and fireball spells used by the hydras in the desert, but I recieved no damage reduction from it, despite my elemental armor rating supposedly going up by about 50. Has anyone else experienced a similar effect?

Bought from Harnil in Marhan's Grotto.

Greater conflagration+winter+frostbound armors+mantra of frost+dryders defense=0 dmg all the time. 'nuff said.

I thought you couldn't use mantras and dryder's at the same time. or did you mean alternate between the two?

You can't; it's either untested theorycrafting, or someone's madly in love with taking an additional 12% less damage over mantra of frost. They're both stances, and as such, one ends when the other begins automatically.
As for alternating, Dryder's Defences isn't really amazing enough to warrant using it AND Mantra of Frost in your bar, when Mantra of Frost will last indefinitely. Neither is going to do much for a ranger, and at least Mantra of Frost gives energy when hit.
100 Al against elemental attacks already drops damage down to 50%.
115 with Frostbound armor would drop cold damage down to 38.6%.
a 40% Mantra of Frost reduction would drop cold damage down to ~23%.
At 15 Wilderness Survival, Dryder's Defences grants +60 AL.
185 AL drops damage down to ~11%.
Edit: I say Dryder's Defence is not useful largely because of its recharge time. Only Oath Shot could redeem it, coupled with Lightning Reflexes, alternating them over the 20 second Oath Shot recharge. [Which would mean no Greater Conflagration]

can u get this from a quest
Former Ruling
No quest.
You have three ways to get it PvE -
Wait til you make it to the Grotto which is near the end of the game.
Have a run to Droknar's from beacon's, and then a run to grotto from there. expensive but you can do it early.
Or there are bosses that use it in like the jungle or desert I think but you'd be wasting a sig of cap.

This helps you when you're running in the shiverpeaks. Now if only it had a shorter recharge time...

In PvP it is probably one skill that can protect you both from elemental and physical spike. The recharge however can make you reconsider.
