There are some things gold can't buy. For everything else, there's farming.
And now for your regularly scheduled rant.
OMFG WTF. Who is tinkering with the in-game economy. It's like a Guild Wars Enron scandal or something.
I first started GW the day it came out. I wasn't an Alpha tester, a Beta tester, a Gamma tester or whatever. Just a lover of MMOs. It was great. I played to my hearts content. Going through the game, I EARN a decent amount of gold. I bought things at traders constantly, like all bipolar affective people do. Superior runes were no more than 1k. Black dye was dirt-cheap in comparison to current prices. It was bliss.
Now I've turned to the dark side of the Guilds. I have tasted the fruit of demise by farming to provide my Guild members (friends IRL) with useful items. I paid 70k for a storm bow. Wow. I'm a sick bastard, too. I took advantage of finding black dye on the US servers for 1.1k at 3am (was skill capping) and bought 250 of the suckers. I'll sell it to you for 2k if you want.
Been to the ToA lately? 95% of the people there are morons. I get blind invited as a monk by 4-5 people right when I zone in.
I think the nerf on the farming in UW was like this: the more cautious you are, the less you get. I got three globs from one mob of Aataxes. I agro'd like 8 of them with a 105 smite monk. Ever since I started playing my new PvE warrior (another character), I just have this urge to run in and wreak havoc! My advice to you other farmers: LET LOOSE.
And to whoever is manipulating the market, F U. Why do I have to farm and contribute to the problem so my poor guildies can get the things that I got on my own?
This isn't supply and demand, it's Rockafeller vs. the homeless.
The real issue? Item price : gold drop ratio is way off. NORMALIZE!

I would have done the same thing, dont you feel guilty! They're upset because they curse at monks too ; )

Oh, people just don't respect monks. One idiot warrior starts complaining and sometimes I forget how to click their name. ^.^ If they would just do their job, I'll do mine. No one needs someone who's never played their class trying to tell them what to do. Letting specific people die is one thing, but drop napping is dirty. I'm just glad you gave them away.
I farm UW because I want specific drops. I don't trade, I don't sell, I don't interact with the idiots running the economy. Why would I pay 10k+ per ecto when I can find all 105 on my own? It's common sense people aren't going to pay the same prices as eBayers, yet they expect casual players to anyway. >.> I find eternals/storms and I toss them to lvl 4s in Ascalon. They're of no use to me, and I don't trade. :\

Hats off to you Zehly.

Sounds like the fissure group I was in a month ago. Im a ranger though. There was a warrior with ascalon city armor. And a few superior runes. And he kept dieing and blaming the monk. Then the other warrior was going all out aggro. So I told him "You need to watch your radar, be a bit more careful." And he says "You have no room to speak, you are a waste of space. Rangers suck and you are not doing anything."
So I told him next time he got attacked by 2 abbysals and our monk is dead. Ill just forget about blinding them.

That is hilarious. I almost hate logging in as my monk. Every area I log in I instantly get 1-3 blind invites. I used to be scared with my farming build. Only grab 3 Aatxes at once and it took forever. Then one day I accidentally grabbed 3 Aatxes and 6 Great Darknesses. I thought I would die, but actually it was 10x easier to kill all of them. Now I try to at least have 5-6 Aatxes. If not I keep runnin till I have more.
When It comes to smites I grab 4+ smites and at least 2 coldfires. Without the smites I could not easily kill the coldfires. I am thinking I just need to start UW by taking the lost soul quest so things will move faster. 3 Aatxes and about 10-12 Great Darknesses.
The only reason I farm is cause somebody posted that there are plenty of farming places and it was my fault that I didn't have money. Well now I farm when I need money. I drop tons of stuff to my Guildies and can even supply them with superior monk runes if they need their own farmer build.
There is just no love for the monks. The thing is everyone hates monks, but do they think that is the only class we play. My Mo/Wa was my third char that I made for farming. I had already beat the game with my Ele/Mes and was 2/3 done with my Wa/Ra.
Just remember to love the monk since they are rich now. ROFL. And to all the people getting po'd about the price of monk runes and are blaming all the monk farmers....
Why do you want all those superior monk runes?

Ecto=15k????
How did I buy 1 for 10k then and 4 more for 11k a piece then (was last night).
Oh ya and your theroy of being more aggresive and taking like 8 aataxes at once. I do it all the time. Have you tried 8 grasping darkness and 4 aatxes at once and no ecto. I find the opposite since I find my ecto in groups of 3 aatxes. Meaning its completly random

Seriously... what's with all the elitist attitudes from the Monk players? oO You guys aren't the only ones that A) get blind invites B) wind up grouping with idiots or C) know how to play your class. I easily see just as many half-ass monks of all specs as I do half-ass non-monks.

This is starting to remind me of eve online.
Hey look i have billions of isk and decide to sway a game in my favor. Why do i have billions of isk? Because i have been playing for a long time and have nothing to draw the money out of me over time in signifigant quantities. Then the next day the forums are in uprise as something npc provided is no longer available till the next patch.
(note: i dont have alot of money in that game, but its a somewhat common practice there, even if it is not a complete buyout situation. Fortunatly, the market there is large and diverse enough so that the entire game isnt wrecked by it.)

Not every w/mo or r/me is horrible... and i have had my fair share of worthless monks,

1) ecto's aren't 15k. they are 10-11k from most farmers.
2) 6 ecto's in 45 min? do you farm yourself? that is a rarity, certainly not normal. i think in 45 min you can get 0-4 ectos.

Wow you must be ridiculously lucky. It's not so much about crazy aggro as well because I aggro nearly everything and the best run I've ever had was like 3 ecto in one run (takes about 20-30 minutes)
And I never have runs like that anymore.
Finally, the monks are all farming because we prefer to only have to take care of ourselves instead of a whole group that aggros 100000 monsters then blame us for not being able to heal

Let's try to stay on the thread topic, guys, and that is, mainly, the prices of stuff now-a-days (with a slight digression into ToA lameness). If and when I farm non-solo, or without guildies, I make sure I pick the smartest newbie I can find, so that they can (a) get items without having to pay a 1,000,000% premium on it, and (b) so I can teach them the proper way to do it (IMHO). I make sure they know not to take advantage of a good thing, but the goal is for them to gain valuable insight into how the Agro system works and strategies for successful gameplay, solo- or- muliplayer.
EDIT: I was thinking, maybe to defeat this economic crisis, we must exploit it to the best of our abilities. Farm more and buy less from the NPCs, thereby devaluing their existance and forcing A.NET to look into why black dye sells for 99k when and if the trader has one. The downside to this is that I still feel bad for the people who just bought the game and are coming into the middle of an inflation.
BTW: No one has PM'd me regarding those dyes yet o.O

lol... I agree 100%. The prices are outrageous.
I remember getting a ecto from a chest like days into the game and it was 3k. The black dyes were like 500 dollars, with the other dyes at what, about 120?
I also had like 2 or 3 monk superior runes that I sold for about 1 plat to the trader. This was before the surge of like 10000x the price.
The prices on stuff are OUTRAGEOUS.

Well I am more than certain that Anet will consider this 105 build an exploit, cause no 1 class should have an advantage over every other one... and regardless of you say, being able to farm the elite areas of Guild wars by yourself is a exploit of a mistake they did not take into consideration.
No im not saying they'll punish anyone that does it... but I am sure EVENTUALLY they will put a stop to it ONCE it gets to their ears.
Then i can laugh at all the monks! HAHAHA YOU'LL SEEN BE BACK TO POOR LIKE THE REST OF US!
you have 2 solutions Anet, choose one.
1. Have enchantment stripping skills in UW
or
2. Have other elite areas be made that can only be soloed by each other class, like one elite place can be soloed by a necro, one by a mesmer, warrior, etc, though im sure that would be tough as hell to come up with.
So in the end, #1 is the best choice o.o lets nip this problem in the bud!

Solution? Good and easy, make the guard at ToA disallow entries to parties less than a certain size, problem solved!

All markets are crazy. Ectos were being bought by the trader yesterday for 16400 or so for more than an hour. Had guys spamming in very distirct of ToA paying 12500(which was high) and finaly saw guys even offering 14-15(stilltrying to squeeze 15-2500 profit per.
But now back to "normal" trader only paying 6500 or so.
Rune trader charging 8K for major superior, yet only paying 25. Black dye elling for 25K and bought for like 600. Silver dye OUT OF STOCK, offering less than 500 for it.
Orange is SELLING for 305, but will be BOUGHT for 250, Red dye SELLING for 2K be BOUGHT for 17, thats right 17. How is it that within the dye tarde itself there is that big a deal? 118 times buy versus sell for red, but is paying 82% of his buy price for arange. I didnt check the others, but they might be the same.
And rubies and saphires, don't get me wrong, I own quite a few of them now, but they are going through the roof, and at 14K per I am tempted to sell, but am holding out. But they have NO current use whatsoever, so why are they so high? Again do not get me wrong, it made that 10/10 sundering haft I sold for 15 of them worth 210 plat (at current prices) so I am happy, even more happy that I was hoarding them at 3500-4500. Even "paid" 7 for a few a couple days ago for a trade that was pretty large.
But something definately has to be done. For a guy like me that has money and has ecto and has stashes of materilas and items it is fun and all, but I see people all day that have 2-3 characters and don't have 20K worth of gold. So how are they going to have fun? Ya playing the game is fun, but sooner or later it gets boring. ness you have somethinf else t do you aregoing to stop playing.
When you can't afford anything "special" then the game isn't fun. Even if it isn't necessary to have those special things to win, it is nice havng them sometimes.

There are enchantment strippers in the UW, they're Obsidian "something" and they cast natures renewal.
I farm as well with my monk, but not b/c of the money, but b/c i want to get my fissure armor by myself. I dont trade a lot, takes up way too much time, and if i do, i dont charge much for it.

i have had a grand total of 5 characters so far (all inclusive), 3 of them have completed all the missions. Currently i have LESS than 1k. it is frustrating, my necro (my first char) was fully black dyed up and had 'uber(ish)' weapons. my ele had NO dye applied at all (she was when i was saveing for a guild hall).
now my warrior is pulling me back but the forge armour for monks costs like 40k all told (the tatoo stuff) when my necros scare stuff costed maybe 12k.
I am reduced to haveing no style, no money and no means of doing dmg.
still have fun though ^^

I'm just waiting for Black Tuesday to occur on the GW economy. Maybe then people will wisen up! Remember that superior vigor rune you just traded for 90k? Now it's worth less than 10k! Hahaha!

Problem solved, economy stabilized.
Ellipson
I made a mesmer as my first character, which basically means I'm a poor, poor sucker. I've been messing around, trying to find a build to solo anything decent with him, but I just can't. The constant inflation into the GW economy from the various farmers out there has really hurt the little guy. The majority of us back here that don't have UW farmers are basically left to watch you guys spam WTS X ITEM!!! over and over again in LA, while we look at our empty pocketbooks.
By the way, does anyone actually manage to sell that stuff at these prices? Even the UW farmers have to be uneasy about 25k for black dye.

Some Stuff is gettting absolutly Rediculous. I started when guild wars first came out and yes I did loose interest for awhile and when I came back everything was crazy, I really saw the difference. I'm Playing everyday now, I spent 3 hours in UW killing everything we saw...NOT 1 ECTO DROP at all.
zehly
Today I saw someone selling a Black Dye for f'ing 30k? WTF? Then I saw someone begging to get steel ingots at a reasonable price, and when people laughed at him, I PM'd him and told him I'd give him the 47 that he needed. Jeebus.
EDIT: Gave him those FREE.
EDIT: Gave him those FREE.

Having high rune prices is OK as long as we can sell back to the trader with a reasonable price. Yesterday Superior Swords was selling for 23k, if I want to sell to trader, but I'd get 27g. Guess what? That means I'm not gonna be selling to the trader! And guess what? The supply at the trader will keep decreasing and keep driving up the price.
So as long as the trader buys back at reasonable price, the economy should go back to a more managable level.
I personally have to problem with Ecto costing that much, since it takes money out of economy help drive down inflation. Get Superior Rune -> sell to trader -> get Ecto -> Economy balance.
As for high monk rune prices, that's perfectly fine too...because everyone is building a 105 farmer monk. If you are gonna be farming anyway, then paying a large up-front cost is not that big of a deal, think of it as investment anyway.
