Beastmaster AND Minions? Necro/Ranger

I was reading about and having fun raising minions with my necro to fight when something dies, when I couldnt get some minions to help I always had my ranger pet.

Is it possible to make a build that keeps both pet abilities failry healthy strong?

It was just fun sitting back and firing off my wands while the rest of the gang did the dirty work. Alas since I am new I don't even know at this point.

I was told that Monk is WAY better for minions...but a few people have stated that ranger is for a Minion Master

I was thinking:

Death Magic
Beast Master
Soul Reaper

as the basis for my build.

It works well in some areas, not so well in others...particularly bad in areas where mobs don't leave dead bodies to exploit.

I believe people used to call this build a "Zoo keeper". I have no idea how it plays, but chances are it won't do too well in pvp, as for some of the Death magic spells you need there to be a corpse.

But as with all other builds if played well, then it will work.
