traders, dyes, and absurdity
slasc
Well, the traders are obviously bugged. When a silver dye costs over 3k and sells for 42g (I tested this out of curiousity to see if just the displayed price was wrong(by selling silver)...it wasn't.)
How long will it take them to fix this? I hope it's before the summer update (unless the update comes tonight)
How are we supposed to use the traders when they're bugged like this.
We need ways to make more gold. Having things spiking like this is just absurd. Esp. when you can't sell stuff for that much.

The traders are bugged, and we do need more ways of making gold. I suggest 2 things for these problems, first, the guys and gals at Anet could make a local economy system, where prices in, say Ascalon City, are not the same as in Lion's Arch, this would allow for a greater degree of flexibility and could prevent mass migrations from server to server.
My second idea is that instead of the traders being reliant on the characters, they could use a system similar to the one Lionhead used in Fable, where items are delivered every few days or so, obviously, this would have to be changed for the huge amount of people using GW, so it could be every few hours or minutes. This idea would surely prevent prices of dyes, runes and materials reaching triple or even quadruple their original prices overnight.
These are just one sad, sad, person's ideas, so feel free to flame them if you wish

Just went on.
Purple was selling for 1.2K, silver for 7K, black for 34K. These prices are OBSECENE! Anet really needs to do something about them.

And another idea: Traders should buy the items from traders at, say, 10% less than what they are selling them for. Traders then make a 'profit' and players are happy with the money they are getting (especially with Black Dye).
These are just the musings of a sad, sad toe, so fell free to flame them if you wish.

What I find utterly ridiculous is that a NPC Dye trader would have only paid me 17 gold for a vial of Blue dye that he was selling for 1649 gold. Most of the other colors are worse. At this rate why in the hell would anyone sell dye to NPC traders? Yes, it's a gold sink, I understand all that but some form of reasonable ratio should be the standard, not this outragous price gouging. What do they think they are trading, oil?
Iceciro
The prices are insane, but you know what? IF THE TRADERS BOUGHT AT A DECENT RATIO, LIKE 90%, THEY WOULDNT BE SO HIGH. All Anet has to do to fix this is change the buy/sell ratio, I dont know why they havent changed this in 2 updates since they RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOed up the economy.
Night Daftshadow
yea, rune and dye traders are messed up. major vigor at trader was 17k at one point. i requested quota to sell it, value was at 25g.
Ultimate_Gaara
they should just restock the merchants every monday or something, if they do not already do so... it would help keep people from posting 300 topics about dye prices...
Prince_Ayreon
I remember when major vigor runes were around 12k. I'd be able to sell it to the trader for, say, 10k.
That gave me some incentive to sell it to the trader and put it back into the economy instead of just hording them and trying to sell them to the 647362x10 other people who are also hording them because they get offered zippo by the trader at the moment.
Give me the incentive to sell it to the trader for goodness sake!
(yes I'm fully aware that the more people sell it to the trader the more prices will go down. I'm not out to make a million dollars, I just want a fair buy/sell ratio like everyone else.)

You guys must have never played Everquest, heh, I don't see any difference in the NPC prices for Dyes and Runes now than I saw in Everquest for specific gear, the NPC's charged a horde for items and only offered a small amount to buy them from you. So, the traders are not bugged, they are finally settling into how they should be and player trading becomes more prosperous. I have black Dye for 20K any takers? )))
Ripper_Roo
they change sell/buy prices like every day
xenoaroe
The traders arent bugged. I looted 2 silver dyes went to sell them and and the trader would give me 1 gold a piece for them yet he sells them for 7k. Why would i say they arent buged? Because they are trying to control the "supply and demand" economy. The Traders are rigged not to pay out anything for the rarest item anymore to slow down farming, and encourage peer to peer trading. The only problem is that Peer to peer trading in this game BLOWS. YOu have to pick a place and sit there spamming a WTS message for hours in order to sell an item. YOU used to be able to just sell to the trader at a decent price and go about your buissness but no longer. The thing this game needs the most, and desperately needs is a new market system where we could post things up for auction IN GAME not in fourmns somewhere on the web.

I belive that the NPCs give good prices on items that are selling fast. So the fact that a superior monk rune is around 64 k means less people are willing to spend that much on the rune so if you go to the trader and try to sell him a monk rune he will offer you a small amount of gold because he doesnt want to be stuck with something no one will buy. And the same goes for dyes...who wants to pay 11 plat for 1 sliver dye not many. So when you want to sell silver dye to NPC he just offers you crap
GhostPoet
I don't like the whole idea of the Trader...I think Dye should be incredibly cheap no matter what...I mean..we already have very little customization with our character...and trying to personalize should be important...why should we be punished for attempting to look different?
When the auction comes out...will the traders be gone?

Grigori Sokolov
anyone see the strategy guide? dye prices are a set cost. why cant they do this for dye? instead of buying for 1g and selling for 5k, they could have a set sell price.

Since this thread seems to be focused on how expensive dyes are, let me ask but what do you suggest as a money sink in this game? There are none except buying Dyes, Runes and Armor.
The community itself is rather quite rich, if you end up cheapening money sinks like this, it will not help the price of the items people are selling since money is pretty easy to come by in this game. If anything, it would greatly increase the price of everything else in this game since everyone will have that extra 100,000 million sitting around for an item they want since theres nothing moderately expensive for them to buy to get rid of the huge amount of saving they have going on.

can you place bets on arena battles? If not..that would be a good place for money to go.
If they add a deeper way to customize your characters appearance...money would have alot more places to go.

If they do fix the traders... I want to be the first in line to sell them some inventory.

When are you people going to stop crying about an arbitrary problem?
There is absolutely NOTHING in the game that is forcing people to spend 3K on silver dye or sell their silver dye for 42g to the NPCs, etc.
Why on earth would you spend 3K on silver dye from an NPC when you're able to get it from a person who is gonna trade it for 500-1K gold???
If anything, the problem is laziness. You'd rather make a pointless thread about some made up problem instead of going out and actually spending 5 minutes trying to trade for silver dye. Seriously... the complaints about the economy, etc. are just out right ridiculous.

The economy is messed up. When traders sell things for >1k, and yet buy it for only 1g.... aside from being one heck of a profit margin, that's not right. The out of control inflation doesn't affect farmers or market watchers as much, but for those that actually just play the game... we're effectively being punished for not farming/playing the market. And you call people lazy for avoiding endless "WTS WTS WTS WTS WTB WTB WTB WTB WTS cool sword WTB good shoes WTS a tooth brush, etc"? Maybe if there were a better trade system (which hopefully there will be in the semi-near future), but it's not always so easy to find what you're looking for.
As an example of the messed up pricing, I attached a screen from earlier today showing the dye trader's selling prices compared with their buy prices (<--for the dyes I have... didn't have them all). I didn't really believe it till I saw it myself.

My biggest problem, I kid you not, with the dye prices the way they are now:
Pre-searing scammers.
People have pretty good luck finding dyes in presearing, yet they see it is only worth 1gp at the merchant, even less than the 2-4 dmg sword in their inventory. It leads them to believe dye is expendable and easy to come by.
Then you get the loser/scammer who has one character sitting in presearing, offering - WOW! - 100 gp for that black dye worth only 1 at the merchant. How could they refuse that?
It really really really makes me mad to see people taking advantage of others.
Meanwhile, why in the world would the newbies ever believe me, some stranger, saying in local chat that they should hold onto that dye, it is worth thousands later on?
My two questions are:
a) What is wrong with people running around with so much money? What makes a gold sink "necessary?"
b) The merchant never runs out of bags, ID kits and salvage kits, and the prices never change... why can the dye not work the same way?

I understand the whole money sink issue...and that there are many people in the game with tons of money and they need something to spend it on. Fine and dandy. However, there are many people in the game (myself included) who do not have time to sit in town and spam "WTS Black Dye!". When I get the time to play this game, I want to do just that, play it! Not sit in town and try to sell things. To that end, I would prefer selling to a trader. I don't suggest the trader give us 90% of the selling price, I realize that's high. But even 50% would be good for me.
I am sitting on 3 black dyes...but today the trader offered me 1g for them. Mind you, she was selling them for 34k or so. *sigh*
I think a consistent buy-back price of 50% from the traders would be fair. Higher would be better of course , but I'd be okay with 50%.

You only give examples of dye traders. You don't need dye at all in this game what so ever. Dye doesn't affect a damn thing in this game other than the color of your armor. Your whole arguement is pathetic.
Alana
It isn't just dyes, although that seems to be a hot topic at the moment. I have found it to be true with runes and materials as well. The traders offer a pitiful amount in return for these items, then turn around and sell them at ridiculous prices. For those of us who don't farm (for whatever reason, we don't need a farming debate here), we can't make money from the things we do get, and therefore can't buy the things we want. I realize I could sit in town and sell the things I have for a decent amount, but I didn't buy the game to trade items.
Perhaps I'm just whining, but I really think there must be a better way.

Anet neglects the largest problem in the game again! Oh no, we'd rather fix price of failiure than the entire game's economy!
